Robert Lewandowski (Polish pronunciation: [ˈrɔbɛrt lɛvanˈdɔfskʲi] (

listen); born 21 August 1988) is a Polish professional footballerwho plays as a striker for Bundesliga club Bayern Munich and is the captain of the Poland national team.

After being the top scorer in the third and second tiers of Polish football with Znicz Pruszków, he moved to top-flight Lech Poznań, and was the top scorer in the league as they won the 2009–10 Ekstraklasa. In 2010, he transferred to Borussia Dortmund for a reported €4.5 million, where he won honours including two consecutive Bundesliga titles and a season as the league's top goalscorer. In 2013, he earned with Borussia a spot in the 2013 UEFA Champions League Final, tournament where he was the second top goalscorer, behind only Cristiano Ronaldo.^[2]

Prior to the start of the 2014–15 season, Lewandowski agreed to join their rivals, Bayern Munich, on a free transfer.^[3] In Munich, he won the Bundesliga title in each of his first three campaigns, earning a spot in the Bundesliga Team of the Year in every season. In 2015–16, he led the league in goalscoring with 30 goals, and in 2016–17 he was named the Bundesliga Player of The Year.^[4][5] He was named to the UEFA Champions League Squad of the Season on each of the last two seasons.^[6][7] He has totalled over 150 goals in Germany's top division, Bundesliga, and reached the century mark quicker than any other foreign player. On 22 September 2015, Lewandowski scored five goals against VfL Wolfsburg in nine minutes, the fastest in any major European football league since records have been kept.^[8]

A full international for Poland since 2008, Lewandowski has earned over 90 caps and was a member of their team at Euro 2012and Euro 2016. With 52 international goals, Lewandowski is the all-time top scorer for Poland. In 2015, he was voted Polish Sportspersonality of the Year and in 2016 he claimed fourth place at the 2015 FIFA Ballon d'Or Awards. He has been named the Polish Player of the Year a record seven times. The Guardian has ranked him as the fifth-best footballer on the planet in 2015

The establishment of the Polish state can be traced back to 966 A.D., when Mieszko I,^[11] ruler of the territory coextensive with that of present-day Poland, converted to Christianity. The Kingdom of Poland was founded in 1025, and in 1569 it cemented a longstanding political association with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania by signing the Union of Lublin. This union formed the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, one of the largest (about 1 million km²) and most populous countries of 16th and 17th century Europe, with a uniquely liberal political system^[12][13] which adopted Europe's first written national constitution, the Constitution of 3 May 1791.

Following the Partitions of Poland at the end of the 18th century, Poland regained its independence in 1918 with the Treaty of Versailles. In September 1939, World War II started with the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany, followed by the Soviet Unioninvading Poland in accordance with the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact. More than six million Poles died in the war.^[14][15] After World War II, the Polish People's Republic was established as a satellite state under Soviet influence.^[16] In the aftermath of the Revolutions of 1989, most notably through the emergence of the Solidarity movement, Poland reestablished itself as a democratic republic.

Poland is a developed market and regional power as well as a possible emerging world power.^[17] It has the eighth largest and one of the most dynamic economies in the European Union,^[18][19] simultaneously achieving a very high rank on the Human Development Index.^[20] Additionally, the Polish Stock Exchange in Warsaw is the largest and most important in Central Europe.^[21]Poland is a developed^[22] and democratic country, which maintains a high-income economy^[23] along with very high standards of living, life quality,^[24] safety, education and economic freedom.^[25][26] According to the World Bank, Poland has a leading school educational system in Europe.^[27][28] The country provides free university education, state-funded social security and a universal health care system for all citizens.^[29][30] Having an extensive history, Poland has developed a rich cultural heritage, including numerous historical monuments. It has 15 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, 14 of which are cultural.^[31] Poland is a member state of the European Union, the Schengen Area, the United Nations, NATO, the OECD, the Three Seas Initiative, and the Visegrád Group.
