Now, people depend on cell phones, email, video calling (ex. FaceTime and Skype), social media, and texting to get a hold of each other. Texting, social media, and emailing are by far the most common form of communication in our digital world. I personally get about 12 emails a day and at least 20 texts and that's a small amount compared to other people. Almost everyone uses social media to get into contact with each other especially businesses and celebrities. Today's form of communication is more impersonal but quicker than communication in the 80's.

In the 80's people depended on phones to contact each other. They used several different varieties of phones to get in touch with people. They used cord phones, cordless phones, and car phones (in the late 80's). People also used fax machines and pagers to send each other messages. People still sent handwritten letters to each other in the mail.

Now, music is still a big part of everyday life. People mainly listen to music on the radio and on their phones. Pop music consists of artists like Kendrick Lamar and Demi Lovato. Another very popular music genre is rap. Rap dominated the charts in 2017 and will most likely continue to do so. These artists are constantly posting out on social media and have gained the world's attention with their music.

In the 80's music was a huge part of everyday life. People gathered around their TV screens to watch music videos on MTV, listened to music on the go using cassette tapes and a Walkman, and also listened to music on record players. Pop music consisted of artists like Cyndi Lauper and Madonna. Other music genres like hip-hop, rap, new wave, and hair metal became extremely popular. These singers and entertainers became legends in the eyes of the public.

Now, smoking and alcohol consumption has become less popular due to research on how it affects your body. There are no longer designated airplane sections nor smoking spots for teachers and students. You still see smoking and alcohol in commercials, movies, and tv shows but they don't have the same effect as they did in the 80's. In some countries, tobacco companies are forced to print pictures of decimated lungs on cigarette packages to deter people from smoking. There is now medication and treatment for alcoholics and smokers who need and want to quit.

In the 80's smoking and alcohol were extremely common things. There was a smoking section on airplanes and a smoking section in school buildings for teachers and students to use at their leisure. Lots of people didn't know the dangers of smoking back then. Commercials, movies, and tv shows all contained smoking and gave the illusion that it was "cool to smoke". People also drank alcohol frequently. Commercials, movies, and tv shows all contained the consumption of alcohol and made it seem luxurious. The legal drinking age changed in the 1980's which made it harder for people to get alcohol.

Throughout the entire book, music is brought up by the two protagonists. They are both interested in a variety of different genres and discuss them earnestly. One band in particular that is repeatedly brought up is The Smiths. To listen to their music, they both use a Walkman with cassettes. Their love of listening to different genres and the cool, old technology made me want to research music in the 80's.

Throughout the story, Eleanor and her family is plagued by Richie's (the step-father) alcohol and smoking abuse. Richie smokes marijuana and spends all of the family's money on alcohol at the local bar. He is never sober and acts in an abusive manner towards his family. His abusiveness towards his family shapes the entire plot of the story. I chose to research alcoholism and smoking in the 1980's as a way to understand what made Richie so abusive. It helped me understand the story more by giving me some insight as to how easy it was to get alcohol and how expensive it was in the 1980's.
