Why do you think Amir walked to the top of the hill ... yes to see the pomegranate tree ... but why?
What is the symbolism behind the fact that the "pomegranate tree hadn't borne fruit in years"?

Amir walked to the top of the hill to relive old memories. THe tree represented Hassan and when he went up to the tree he could face his regret and think about Hassan. The symbolism of the tree dying shows how their friendship lost the qualities that made it whole.

Amir wanted to get closure and face his fears. He specifically looked for their names carved in the tree. The tree symbolizes Amir's guilt wearing him down over the years and maybe if he goes back to the tree and gets his closure the tree will bear fruit again.

He went to the top of the hill because he wanted to remember his friendship with Hassan and how it ended there. The symbolism behind the pomegranate tree not bearing fruit since Amir left is it represents how Hassan and Amir's friendship ended when he left. It is ironic because they thought they would rule over Kabul together but neither of them live there and it was destroyed by the Taliban.

He walked to the top of the hill to relive his old memories. He wanted to see the tree that had "Amir and Hassan. Sultans of Kabul", written on it. It could symbolize Hassan and Amir's dead relationship. It bore fruit when they were friends but now that their relationship is gone, it no longer had fruit.

Amir walked to the top of the hill to relive old memories. He had carved him and hassans name into the tree because they would go to that tree all the time. Amir loved hassan even if he couldn't show it. Amir goes to the tree to redeem himself and recognize Hassan and their relationship. The tree is symbolic of old times and the relationship between hassan and Amir. The tree is dead as their friendship died and the tree was lively when they were friends.
