Title: Letter About Little Rock 9

Author:Daisy Bates

Observe:
- It is in letter format.
- There are no pictures in this letter.
- The writing in this letter is formal, and is addressed to Roy Wilkins, who worked for the NAACP.

Reflect:
- The intended audience is Roy Wilkins, as well as other active members of the NAACP.
- The purpose of this letter from Daisy Bates to the NAACP is the same as all other civil rights activists, which is hope for desegregation. Daisy describes the abuse and discrimination that the Little Rock 9 students have endured, and is asking the NAACP for financial assistant to prevent the students from getting arrested.
- There is a bias in this letter. Daisy sides with the students and is against the school and police, specifically their actions against desegregation.
- More details about what Ms. Bates plans are for the children would be beneficial to this piece.

Question:
- This letter is about the treatment of Little Rock 9 in school.
- The letter was composed in 1957, in Little Rock, Arkansas.

CHILDREN'S BOOK

Title: A Dream of Freedom

Author: Diane McWhorter

Observe:
- The text on the pages is split in half on each page.
- The format of the pages is organized, but cut directly in the middle. The first letter beginning the first word of the initial paragraph in the "Little Rock" section of the book is bigger and bolder in comparison to the others.
- There are four pictures in total throughout the "Little Rock" section of the book, all of which are authentic, black and white, photographs, making them primary sources.
- The language of the text is comparatively formal, but higher level vocabulary is not used. The piece's purpose is to educate, but it seems that the target audience is intended for young adults.

Reflect:
- The articulation in this book reflects that of a mature child or young adult. This is apparent when the vocabulary utilized in the book is considered. There are no specific words that seem to be what one may consider higher level vocabulary. I also noticed a particular phrase, "worsening the conditions," which easily could have been replaced with the word, "exacerbate." This leads me to believe that the intended audience lies on the younger side of the young adult group.
- The purpose of this section of the book is to educate readers about Little Rock 9.
-There does not appear to be a bias, as the book states facts and there are no hints of opinion that are detectable.
- This text would be better if it went more in depth about Little Rock 9's school lives.

Question:
- This text discusses Little Rock 9, who was involved, and certain hardships that the students experienced.
- This text was created to inform readers about civil rights movements, specifically Little Rock 9.
- There are no other sources listed.
