Nina's Talk enfasizes the importance of participation, relevance and community (conection) in our museums today, In schools this 3 ideas should also be our guidelines. If we want people to learn about something we need to ENGAGE them, to make it relevant and ABOUT them. So, I think participation in Museums (as in schools) is essencial for significative learning. It is not about "their history", it's about OUR history, OUR PLANET, our work... It's about who we are.
amvicencio (Portugal)

Hello!

Most museums are very wide and diverse contexts for learning so it is important to reduce the "novelty" effect. Otherwise the students will feel a bit lost and probably it will be difficult for them to focus on the activities (and learning) related with the main learning goals for the visit to the museum. So, it is very important that the main goals of the visit are explicit to the students and that they know from the very begginning what king of assignments they are supposed to develop from that visit. It is also important that they can get to know something about the museum that they are about to visit: what kind of museum it is? What are the mais themes explored in the museum collections? How is the space at the museum organized? It is essencial that all the security rules and schedules are also explicit to everyone.

There are a lot of ways to prepare our students for the visit and the activities that they will develop. We can just tell all about this in an oral presentation, give them a resume (written information) but if we could we should try a more Inquiry apporoach. We can divede our studets in small groups (3 or 4 students/group) and challenge them to research information about the museum, come up with a research-question or problem and plan an investigation that they can carry on at the museum. They can also get started from a problem or resarch-question and reseach what museum could help them with their inquiry. Either way, it is very important that students feel that they will learn something new at the museum. It will be a fieldtrip not a saunter.

amvicencio (Portugal)

If you are engaged in an inquiry approach probably your students are visiting the museum to investigate something. So, let them draw their investigation: collect data about the collection and some specific objects, discuss ideias, making hypothesis, investigate further more when they get back to school. Collecting data can be very challeging: they can take pictures, they can interview museum specialists or even other visitors about their perceptions, they can draw objetcs or compare the objects they know from other contexts with the ones displayed at the museum. At the end it is very important to gather everyone around and make sure that the main ideias (key concepts) are explicit to all students so, before getting out of the museum, the teacher and docent (museum educator) should promote a discussion with all the students and make a roundup of all the learning goals developed at the museum.
amvicencio/Vicencio (Portugal)
