1. Check if they can provide authentication? It can be in the form of a badge, a mobile phone app, or something else, but they must prove they are supposed to be there.

2. If they don't provide sufficient authentication (such as only saying "I work for so-and-so, I'm supposed to be here), then check in with either their boss or yours to get confirmation that they are authorized to enter the door.

3. If this is not enough and you are still not sure whether they are authorized to enter, then the best practice would be to politely apologize and inform them that they cannot enter the secure door.

1. Check the sender's email address. If you see any typos or random characters, then the email is likely malicious.

2. Check any links sent in the email, while keeping in mind that links are read right to left, such that "microsoft.com.us" will lead to a completely different site than "microsoft.com".

3. Check the attachment's file extension if the email has an attachment. A .bat file, for instance, is a batch file which is a list of commands to be run by the computer, which can be malicious. If you're unsure of a file extension, look it up to find out what it is.

4. Look for typos in the body of the email itself, while these are just a red flag and not necessarily an indication of malicious intent, they are still evidence.

5. Sometimes characters called unicode confusables (found here) will be used in place of regular characters. These confusables, as their namesake implies, look exactly like other characters, and can be found inside of email addresses or links, subtly altering them just enough to look like a real address or link but still be completely different.

6. If you're still unsure after all of this, then reach out to the computer security team at your company, or ask a coworker if they also received the email. Remember, you aren't wasting their time if you have a real security concern, and you can potentially keep your coworkers safe if they email was sent to everyone at the company.
