1Compare defining attributes and non-defining attributes of two- and three-dimensional shapes; build and draw shapes that possess defining attributes.

• Give students physical manipulatives of a variety of shapes to look at. I will then claim different defining attributes.

• However, I will define the wrong ones for the wrong shapes.

• This is aimed at getting students engaged, paying attention, and having a little fun. Students love correcting my "mistakes" and it shows me what they know/their misconceptions.

Identify defining attributes for 2-4 shapes such as triangles, circles, rectangles, and squares.

• Give students cutouts of shapes with different attributes and have them pick out defining attributes.

• Think pair share with a partner and talk about what attributes they noticed and what their partner may have had differently.

• I will be asking probing questions throughout to get students thinking critically and further developing their thinking/ exploring.

• Now that students have come up with some of their own definitions, we will come back all together and I will confirm what they have been thinking.

• I will be presenting in a lecture format providing them with definitions for the defining and non-defining attributes and how they work.

• I will be telling students the "why" as well as showing helpful videos on the content.

• I will be providing multiple means of representation throughout this.

• Students will now be switching to non-defining attributes. They will all be tasked with finding 5 real objects from our classroom that represent shapes.

• They will then have to discuss in their groups what the non-defining attributes of the different shapes are.

• This is aimed at showing students that we have shapes all around us in the real world that make up everything.

• Students will now play an online sorting game that categorizes the different defining and non-defining attributes.

• Once students have placed all attributes in their categories they will discuss what similarities and differences they have noticed.

• Students will finish off and show me what they have learned by creating a written (or typed) short answer about how the defining and non-defining attributes are different and any commonalities they have.
