An issue which is relevant to the novel is trying to find your true identity. This problem has proven to be quite a struggle for the humans, as this is possible causes of depression and is something faced in the adolescent stage of life. Since the topic of trying to find oneself is quite repetitive throughout the story, it is considered to be the actual theme of the book since it plays a key role in the development of the story. The main characters of the story have all faced hardships throughout life which bring up the unsettling question. The main characters of our story, Percy, Annabeth, and Grover, are faced with this task which is exemplified throughout the journey.

One character who exemplifies this issue is Percy. In the book's beginning, Percy even goes as far as to tell the audience, "Am I a troubled kid? Yeah. You could say that." (Riordan 1), to exemplify his rash behavior. Percy later learns of his true self when he learns that his behavior is due to the fact that he is a half-blood (demigod). Another character who also exemplifies the issue of discovering oneself is Annabeth. Around when Annabeth is first introduced, she says that, "My dad's resented me from the day I was born, Percy," she said. "He never wanted a baby. When he got me, he asked Athena to take me back and raise me on Olympus because he was too busy with his work." (Riordan 200), to explain why she has been at Camp Half-Blood the longest. The quote demonstrates quite well how depressing Annabeth's life is. The journey which Annabeth takes with Percy and Grover shows how she isn't afraid to discover the type of person she truly is. The final character which demonstrates the issue of identifying oneself is Grover. Grover is a satyr whose job is to take different half-bloods to safety. Sadly, on Grover's first mission, one of the half-bloods he was trying to rescue was killed by a monster along the way. Grover was then on viewed as a failure by the council. Later, Chiron tells Percy that, "My dad's resented me from the day I was born, Percy," she said. "He never wanted a baby. When he got me, he asked Athena to take me back and raise me on Olympus because he was too busy with his work." (Riordan 200), to show how Grover must discover whether he's the person he dreams to be, or the failure of a satyr they say he is.

A prominent theme in the story which is often overlooked by even the most thorough readers is the alone factor, or isolation. The only major character who demonstrates this theme is Percy. Percy is explained as pretty much a loner from the beginning. Percy says in the beginning, "...hitting my best friend Grover in the back of the head with chunks of peanut butter-and-ketchup sandwich." (Riordan 3), which doesn't imply it's his only friend, but it pretty much is. Though it really isn't obvious until Percy doesn't mention any other friends, sadly no one would call, "He was scrawny, he cried when he got frustrated. He must've been held back a couple grades, because he was the only sixth grader with a beard and the start of a wispy beared on his chin. On top of all that, he was crippled." (Riordan 3), a best friend in today's society (except me). Hades is also another example of someone who is isolated from the world. All of the gods are on Mt. Olympus, yet he's stuck in the underworld for 364 days a year. Though the two don't seem too much alike, Percy and Hades both show that isolation can generate anger since Percy's bad attitudes towards others didn't really help him in the long run and Hades sort of follows suit with that example.

Something that I have definitely learned from The Lightning Thief is that being isolated from society can often be detrimental. Just look at Percy's attitude. I'm not saying I'm some sort of troubled kid or anything, but his isolation from the rest of the world doesn't help him in the slightest. He's constantly pulling out the, "I'm going to kill her" (Riordan 3), card and throwing about the phrase," Will you shut up?" (Riordan 5), whenever anyone really talks about him, whether it's good or bad. Hades obviously isn't our portrayal of a superhero, either. Like I said, I never had any run-ins with the law nor have I ever been suspended, given any referrals, or called to the office for anything negative. Just the author's views on introverted prospective makes me think about how I need to "correct" myself in order to be a better part of our functioning society.
