We can see that while the main objective is to protect the merchant ships, the ways in which the Navy accomplishes this usually involve some form of deception, as seen by the Q-ship and the "dazzle-painted" front boats.

We can see that there is a "convoy meeting area" in the orange box, and this helps us understand one of the convoy tactics - those that were not necessarily created for the protection of merchant ships sometimes formed to lure out U-Boats.

The convoy system didn't stop the German U-Boats entirely, but by the end of1917, many boats had been saved in comparison to earlier that year. Because the Allies increased shipping and merchant ships remained afloat, German U-boats didn't really affect shipping as greatly they may have (without the convoy system). The convoy system also led to a large overall improvement of technology, which included inventions such as sonar and submarine nets.
