When discussing this question with my family I got multiple mixed responses. One common characteristic of happiness was the presence of family. My father said that he would be happy if everyone in our immediate family was kind and loving to one other. My mom said that happiness to her was me and my sister getting along and eventually progressing to college. And my sister, oh my sister, said that happiness to her was me staying out of her room and not taking her things.

When discussing happiness with my peers at Neuqua Valley High school, I brought up a point of,

" If you did not achieve a main goal in your life, would this alter your prolonged happiness?"

I was met with mixed responses. Some of my peers said that they would be very depressed because by achieving their goals they gain happiness, where as other said that they're mindset was stronger than that. They thought that the journey of trying to achieve a goal was more important than actually achieving said goal.

I agree with this quote very much. I feel that people expect happiness to come naturally and that is not true. If you do not work to be happy in this world then you cannot expect to be happy. This quote embodies what I believe to be the key to happiness.

Happiness to me is very basic. I feel that in order to be happy I must have a strong connection to my family. In addition I feel that I must be grinding for something in my life. For me personally hard work brings me the most joy and Happiness. Lastly if I surround my self with the right friends I would be a happy boy. By having the right friends to support me I would be able to achieve anything I put my mind too. Unlike most people money does not bring me happiness. I realize that money comes and goes and that there a plenty of rich people who are miserable. Because I realize money isn't very important it does not dictate my happiness.

Although I disagreed with him that achieving your goals must lead to happiness, I agreed with him that striving to achieve your goals is a key component of happiness.

Although Santiago did not complete his goal of catching a giant fish and bringing it home to shore, the journey and the experience of finally catching a fish was enough to satisfy his happiness. This is what I have been saying the entire activity. Its not about completing the goal, but its about the journey it takes to get there. Santiago realized this and it made him happy.
