You may safely say, A penny for your thoughts, or a thousand pounds."

-Henry David Thoreau

The image shows peacefulness in an environment filled with nature rather than material.

"The sun illuminates only the eye of the man, but shines into the eye and the heart of the child. The lover of nature is he whose inward and outward senses are still truly adjusted to each other; who has retained the spirit of infancy even into the era of manhood. His intercourse with heaven and earth, becomes part of his daily food. In the presence of nature, a wild delight runs through the man, in spite of real sorrows."

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

The image shows a trapped child such as the inner child trapped inside a man who was become invested in conformity within society.

"The production of a work of art throws a light upon the mystery of humanity. A work of art is an abstract or epitome of the world. It is the result or expression of nature, in miniature. For, although the works of nature are innumerable and all different, the result or the expression of them all is similar and single. Nature is a sea of forms radically alike and even unique. A leaf, a sun-beam, a landscape, the ocean, make an analogous impression on the mind."

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Beauty is an inexplicable feeling which can best be described using art such as the image above. There are different forms of beauty but they all lead to one familiar feeling.

Oh life! of the questions of these recurring,

Of the endless trains of the faithless, of cities fill’d with the foolish,

Of myself forever reproaching myself, (for who more foolish than I, and who more faithless?)

Of eyes that vainly crave the light, of the objects mean, of the struggle ever renew’d,

Of the poor results of all, of the plodding and sordid crowds I see around me,

Of the empty and useless years of the rest, with the rest me intertwined,

The question, O me! so sad, recurring—What good amid these, O me, O life?

                                    Answer.

That you are here—that life exists and identity,

That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse."

-Walt Whitman

Walt Whitman emphasizes the idea of identity in a world of comformity where society forces individuals to submit to the materialistic aspect of the world. This leaves individuals with no sense of free thinking where they cannot maintain the natural conscience they were born with. Instead, they become another agent in society allowing it to function. At the same time, society does not give one thought as to who's shoulders it is standing upon. It is important to be able to indentify the purpose which humans live for, what they need to contribute. Each individual has a verse, but that verse is clouded with societal pressures and resonsibilites where materialism becomes a priority and purpose, our true calling, is thrown aside.

My verse will be to help people. I am studying to become a cardiac surgeon so that I can help people who require cardiac procedures. My parents have always encouraged me to pursue a medical career and whilst it would be understandable to think that the only reason why I am pursuing it is because of them, it is certainly not true. A while ago, my grandfather was taken to the hospital and we were informed that he had heart failure and that he would require a procedure. He brushed it off and gave it no importance. The day he was discharged, he collapsed and was taken to the hospital via ambulance this time. It was a very scary day, very chaotic. We had thought that it was over. Once he was transported to the hospital, a cardiac surgeon was called over to perform a surgery where she inserted a pacemaker. This experience made me realize the importance of her job and the fear created by it encouraged me to contribute just as she did. Without her, my grandfather wouldn't have been here today.
