Animatronics refers to the use of cable pulled devices or motors to emulate a human or an animal. This brings lifelike characteristics to an inanimate object. They can be implemented by using computer control and human control. Motion actuators are used to imitate muscle movements and create realistic motions in limbs. We first get to see these visual effects come to life in the movie "Alien", and used much throughout the 80s. The producers of the movie used animatronics, liquid, and foam latex. This was able to create a whole new dimension onscreen, and keep it realistic close up.
Watch- 0:36 to 1:07

Visual effects that were used in the 70s the most were set designs, costumes and make ups, etc. Some producers used primary colors or dark colors in order to set the mood. Some producers shot around areas that looked haunted to give off a sense of paranoia such as the movie Nosferatu the Vampyre which was shot in 1979. It was shot around a grave site. The producers also used shadows in horror movies to make the villian's/monster's limbs appear to be longer and look scarier. Also, the people would tend to wear colors such as red and black in their costumes, so that the audience would know that they didn't have much of a soul.

During the 1980's, people tended to use a lot of close-up shots in horror movies. This was for them to be able to show the emotions that the character(s) were feeling. They also used establishing and long shots. Establishing shots were generally used for the trailer of the horror movie. Long shots were generally used for the death scene . It was also to show the setting that the people were in at the time.
