Wind and rain are whipping North Carolina's coast, after the storm made landfall. Evacuation warnings are in place for up to 1.7 million people across South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. Eight months' worth of rain is expected to fall in three days. Parts of the Carolina coast are expecting 20-30in (50-75cm) of rain, with isolated regions seeing up to 40in. Florence remains "very dangerous", even though it has been downgraded to a category one hurricane with 90mph (150km/h) winds

Johnathan Taylor, of Kansas City, was charged Thursday with misdemeanor animal abuse. Court records say the principal of Center High School told an animal control officer about the video and said she believed the person seen kicking the cat was Taylor, a former student. A cat was found dead at the school.
