He had 8 brothers and sisters who were all raised catholic. Edmund was forced to receive his primary school education from a ‘hedge school’ which were illegal as they were religious, these schools often contained only one teacher. He later attended a commercial academy in Kilkenny city. As a young man he moved from Callan to Waterford to become his uncles apprentice, after he died the business was passed onto Edmund. Edmund became very successful and wealthy, and in 1785 he was married to Mary Elliot. They had a short love and soon became pregnant, sadly a carriage accident in 1789 Mary was forced into premature labor and died in childbirth. Their daughter was also named Mary and was born disabled because of this. 
After this tragic loss Edmund began his mission to educate young, poor boys in Waterford. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’
36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”
37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”
Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

This parable relates to Edmund Rice as just like the Samaritan used his own money to pay for the man's stay in the inn, Edmund paid out of his own pocket to create the school for poor boys.

As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their distance, they called out, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” When he saw them, he said to them, “go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were made clean. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. He prostrated himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus asked, “were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” Then he said to him, “get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well.”

Edmund Rice gave poor, sick and homeless children an education, just like Jesus in this story when he cleanses the lepers, giving them a chance to have a fruitful and happy life.

He had a very deep connection to Mary, the mother of Jesus as he would often say the Hail Mary. Another prayer that could have inspired him was the Apostles Creed, this is because throughout Edmund’s letters, he repeatedly tells the addressed to trust in God, and this prayer states “I believe in one God.” Edmund was very invested in reading the bible as well, and he would mark pages throughout it. Commonly scripture passages that related to moneylending and high rates of interest. But often he would speak about doing the work of God and later being rewarded for it. When he would write these letters, he would do so in the presence of the blessed sacrament which is also known as the body and blood of Jesus. The key message behind his letters is when he invites people to trust in god in their times of hardship. A quote from a writing of his was, "Have courage; the good seed will grow up in the children's hearts later on." This can be interpreted as him saying that his hard work and patience with the children will all be worth it when they grow up, and continue his mission. Throughout his lifetime Edmund wrote many letters which often invited the recipient to begin doing God’s work and trusting in him.

He began when he was 40 years old, after he started to see the injustice in his town of Waterford. There were poor children running around the streets that no-one cared about, along with penal laws which affected Christians greatly. After recognizing this he began praying to God, by using the ‘Our Father’ and Rosary Beads. Soon he began speaking to people about the injustice, beginning with two women who were creating a school and convent for girls of Waterford, where it was suggested he create one for boys. He then also consulted Bishop Lanigan of Kilkenny who agreed that it was a good idea. On the 7th of June 1803 Mt. Sion was officially opened and had 200-300 boys attending. It was founded by Frederic Ozanam in April of 1833 when he noticed the poor families on his walk to university each day. He and his friends began giving to the poor and soon more people joined, creating The Society of Saint Vincent De Paul. Modern-day members in this charity pray for change so that the country is a better place with less suffering. The charity often creates awareness of the poverty in Australia through talking to kids at schools and advertisements online. The actions which Saint Vincent De Paul performs include supplying warm clothes and blankets to people on the streets, helping people with mental health issues, tutoring children and much more. All of these actions help the community, but they mainly focus on helping people in poverty, just like Edmund Rice supported poor children by giving them an education.
