This is because it is part of a natural cylcle called the carbon cycle. As plants absorb the same amount of CO2 that is release when burning biomass, it results in a healthy and natural balance in CO2 levels.

Wood is the most common in biomass but I think that's not the best way to use biomass because wood isn't really waste. 

One way biomass can be used in a positive way is something called Waste-to-energy plants. They burn waste to create turbines, that provides 15 million kilowatt-hours enough to power 1.5 million homes.
