The United States responded by invading Afghanistan to dethrone the Taliban's leader, bin Laden.
Bin Laden denied everything at first, but in 2004 he claimed responsibility for the attacks. He was killed in 2011 during a U.S. military raid, named as Operation Neptune Spear.
