PhD research: Influences of external colour schemes of buildings in New Zealand (1840 - 1965)

Meeting submitted by Ian Bowman (Victoria University of Wellington, New Zeeland)

When and where?

31 May from 9:00-10:00 in the Trippenhuis

You can also use the Discussion page (link)

Context

I have just begun my PhD research on the topic of "paint colours and colour schemes applied on the exteriors of buildings in New Zealand between 1840 and 1965". This is quite a wide timeframe which may likely narrow. I would be keen to discuss with paint colour experts some disparate topics which have arisen so far in my research:

Who chose the colours? Was it the building owner, the painter, the oil. and colour merchant (i.e. where they bought the paint) or was it an architect

When did colour charts (paint charts) come into widespread use?

What impact did colour theorists such as M. E. Chevreul, D. R. Hay or authors such as Owen Jones or Charles Eastlake have on the selection of colours

The accuracy or otherwise of colourised post cards or other publications that showed buildings

How accurate is AI colourising of post cards or other publications (the NZ director Peter Jackson used AI to colourise his WWI movies).

I am sure there will be lots more questions but I hope some of you might be interested in discussing their ideas or research with me.

Combined impromptu meeting Reflecting on the use and properties of various paint types

When and where?

31 May from 9:00-10:00 in the Trippenhuis

You can also use the Discussion page (link)

This will be a combined meeting of the following entries:

The use of linseed paint over modern petrochemical paints in architectural restoration and renovation projects, meeting submitted by Michiel Brouns (Brouns en Co)

Is there a paint better suited for use in a tropical climate? Meeting submitted by Pauline Prior (artprojects and media production)

Context of impromtpu meeting by Michael Brouns

The use of linseed paint as an architectural finish was ubiquitous for centuries. I suggest it would be helpful to have a discussion on how this environmentally friendly building material can be 'reintroduced' in this field. The discussion should centre around the pros and cons of modern paints vs linseed paint in terms of production, application, durability and the environment.

Context impromtpu by Pauline Prior

In Pauline's research of the white historical woorden buildings of Paramaribo, Suriname, it emerged that the biggest problem is the affordability of constantly having to paint. The climate, tropical temperature and humidity, is the cause. To give an example, the synagogue has to be painted every two years, which is a financial problem for an increasingly smaller group of people who have to pay it.

The building is made of good quality wood. Pauline inquired with various paint companies about the possibility of using different paint; boat paint for example or 95% reflective paint, other primer? They all come with Rubbol-likebel stuff as best to use.

I would like to discuss this and get ideas.

Interesting for technical people with tropical experiences.

What is an impromptu meeting?

An impromptu meeting is an off-programme meeting for a small group of people. The impromptu meetings will gather a maximum of 18 people in a working room within the Trippenhuis venue. The topic may cover any conservation-related issue. Impromptu meetings could be proposed in the weeks before the Conference by any registered participant. Their primary aim is to foster more efficient networking in a flexible, convenient way.
