Ellen Hopkins - Glass

The novel is about a girl named Kristina who develops an addiction to cocaine,(also known as "Crank") and along with that addiction she develops a second identity,"Bree". It all began one summer when Kristina went to visit her father whom lived out of state, and she met a boy named Adam. Adam got Kristina, or "Bree", into her addiction. It also didn't help that Kristina's father somewhat encouraged the addiction. I chose this book because it's based on a true story, and i've always been fascinated to know and understand what goes on in an addicts' mindset. The most interesting part so far, and sad, is that Kristina ends up having a son, named Hunter. Kristina's parents, and family donated money which was to be saved up for Hunter's college funds. Kristina ends up using these funds to pay for her drugs.

The main character of "Glass" is a girl who goes from a shy girl who wouldn't dare misbehave, to a girl who spirals out of control. One summer and she's turned into a girl with an addiction that controls her every move. Quite honestly I feel as if Kristina will end up either in jail, again, or dead, due to her addiction.

If "Glass" were made into a movie I would cast Chloe Grace Moretz as Kristina. I chose her as an actress to be casted because in a few movies i've seen Chloe casted in, her character either goes through some type of traumatic event or her character is secretive. For example, in "If I Stay", Chloe casts as a teenage girl whom has everything going for her until her and her family get into an extremely bad car accident. Another movie she has casted in, her character is mysterious and dangerous. In "Let Me In", Chloe plays a young girl whom terrorizes a young boy's life.

The place in which "Glass" takes place isn't given in the book. Personally, I would not like to live in this setting, whether I were to be in Kristina's (the addict) shoes, struggling to keep my life together due to my addiction. Or her family members and friends whom are at a loss of what they can do to help her anymore.

"Breaking the Habit" by Linkin Park:

"Breaking the Habit" relates to this novel because the lead singer, Chester talks about struggling with an addiction and promising himself that he is going to get clean or "break the habit" as he says, and about him pushing people away by saying things he doesn't mean. This relates to Kristina in "Glass" because Kristina begins to push her family away and only care about when her next "fix" is going to be, and how she promised her family countless times she was going to get clean, and she did, but that eventually ended up in her giving in to her addiction and unfortunately relapsing. "I don't know what's worth fighting for or why I have to scream. I don't know why I instigate> And say what I don't mean.I don't know how I got this way. I know it's not alright. So, i'm breaking the habit. I'm breaking the habit tonight".

The primary conflict within "Glass" is Kristina's overwhelming addiction with cocaine, and the lengths that she goes to in order to be able to purchase it, or the things she does to get the money to be able to. Unfortunately, due to how many times Kristina has claimed she is going to change, and her actions, seeing as she hasn't done much for herself to get clean. I feel like she will either end up in jail, or dead. You can't help someone who doesn't want to be helped.

A reoccuring theme that happens in "Glass" is that "one little decision can impact the rest of your life". By Kristina making the decision in her life to use "Crank" for the first time, not knowing that that would cause her life to spiral and her to gain an overwhelming addiction, that she is going to struggle for the rest of her life getting over.

I would recommend this book because it can be an eye opener to those who choose to experiment with drugs that they could potentially become addicted to which will ultimately ruin the rest of their lives. The book series is also educational, seeing as the book is in the perspective of Kristina, whom is the addict. The book shows the perspective of the addict and what it's like living as one.
