Developing Mindful Leadership

Transforming leaders into mindful leaders- I chose this resource because I truly believe that mindfulness is the key component in great leadership. Leading is one of the most challenging roles that we can take on in life; it requires strong skill, education and passion. We need to create the space, the breathing room, necessary to be clear and focused, and to listen deeply to ourselves and to others. I found this article to be incredibly insightful.

Why Mindful Leadership?

Mindful leadership is being aware of ourselves and how we we impact one another. Matt was born in Detroit, Michigan and spent the first 9 years of his career helping businesses and organizations communicate like humans in their marketing- he describes mindful leadership as the greatest act of love; a lifelong journey of choosing to show up and asking yourself, "Am I choosing to be a leader?" I selected this video as a resource because I previously have taken a Leadership in Healthcare course with Professor Boniface, and I thoroughly enjoyed the content of the class. Mindful leadership was the core topic of course, and how to show up as a better leader- I think that this video conveys many important messages in concerns to mindful leadership.

I chose this resource because this book is the holy grail in context to leadership. I have previously taken a Leadership in Healthcare course at OU with Professor Boniface- this book is now something that I reference back to in each of my classes. I think that this an important resource to keep on the bookshelf for the copious amounts of insight and real life examples that it demonstrates throughout the entire book.

"The Art of People" is a book that defines 11 simple people skills that will get you everything you want. "People matter. More than anything, in getting what you want in your job, career, and life. The relationship you have with people, big and small, make all the difference between a dead end career and empty existence." I chose this as a resource because I feel that I struggle with building genuine, everlasting connections with people and I would like to grow in this area.

I was interested to learn that my preferred conflict style was avoidance and this article provided more insight into my type.

I chose this article as a resource because we could all deepen our understanding of cultural competence and integrate the skillset into our everyday lives. Cultural competence is defined as, "our will and actions to build understanding between people, to be respectful and open to different cultural perspectives, strengthen cultural security and work towards equality in opportunity." This article further explains the learning journey and the importance of cultural competence.

I chose this resource because it greatly associates with the book "The Art of People". It is a personality system that aims to reveal how emotions drive our lives and how we engage with others in an effort to get what we want and need. The Enneagram defines nine personality types, each with its own set of strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for personal growth. I think that this is a good resource to compare to the Meyer-Briggs personality type.

In our louder and louder world, says sound expert Julian Treasure, "We are losing our listening." Julian shares five ways to re-tune your ears for conscious listening -- to other people and the world around you. I though that it was interesting that 60% of our communication is composed of listening, although, we only retain about 25% of the content we hear. Listening is defined as, making meaning from sound- sound places us in time and space. I chose this video as a resource because to listen consciously is to listen fully; I believe that we can all strengthen our active listening skills and deepen our connections and understandings.
