They lived around Alaska and Canada which are located east to the Bering Sea, and South to the Arctic Sea.

The picture belows shows present-day Alaska.

The Apache Tribe was not one to stay in the same place. Instead they would move around, and they would bring their teepees with them. They would however sometimes stay in one place, when they had plenty of resources. The Apache Tribe would move around to hunt for buffalo and other resources. They would move using something called a travois. A travois is a sled that is pulled around by dogs. The Europeans came up with a better way to move around, that they used. When they came over they brought horses with them. This then influenced the Apache's to start having the horses pull their travois instead of the dogs, which would help them travel faster.

The picture below shows an Apache Native American on his horse.

The Apache Tribe would often trade with other tribes. They were also really known for raiding other tribes. They would still trade and make a profit that way with tribes like the Pueblo and the Spanish. They also believed that they would steal from the tribes they passed. This was not a good things because people would often end up getting hurt. When raiding their steathiness was a key part of their success. The Apache stole things like horses, corn, and other goods. The tribe got tuberculosis after the disease got to the Jicarilla. Since tuberculosis spreads so fast, it quickly spread through the tribe.

The picture below shows a group of Apache Native Americans. They also hunted for deer and antelope. The women within the tribe would also go out and search for nuts, fruit and seeds in their environment. They would also at times eat corn, that they got while raiding other tribes. The Apaches had a rule to eat bugs, insects, and things that may live in the water. Anything that ate bugs or insects they would not eat. The Apache tribe would not eat fish, bear, or pigs because they ate "gross" food. They would only eat food, that doesn't consume "nasty things".

The picture below shows an animal that the Apache would hunt.

The Apache Tribe lived in two different types of homes. When they didn't stay in one general population for very long, they used Teepees which allowed them to have easy access to moving around. They would move around so that they were able to get resources for food and survival. The Teepees are made of long poles that are covered in animal hide. The Apache Tribe would also have a more permanent home. Their more permanent homes were called wickiups. Wickiups are made of tree sapling put together that form a dome. On top of it there are grass and bark.

The picture below shows a teepee an Apache Native American might live in. They would color their buckskin with mineral paint, they would typically then add some beadwork. Their shoes were made of a single piece of buckskin. There is a piece of rawhide that the buckskin is sewed to. The women would wear a two piece outfit. It would be made of buckskin, and have a poncho blouse. They would wear a skirt, and they would include the deer tail at the bottom. The men would wear a buckskin shirt and a cloth bottom.

The Apache are part of the Southwestern Native American tribes, and they lived in Southwestern North America. The Southwest has very little vegetation, and deserts stretch on for miles. There are many sandstone deposits, and the Colorado River has created many canyons such as the Grand Canyon in Arizona. The Southwest is semi-arid to arid which means that they receive very little rainfall. It is also dry and hot year round. However the mountains throughout the region, receive large amounts of snow.

The picture below shows the Grand Canyon.

The Southwestern Native American tribes spoke Hokan, Uto-Aztecan, Tanoan, Keresan, Kiowa-Tanoan, Penutian, and Athabaskan. Most of the religions believed by the tribes were based around Animism. Animism is the idea that all natural things such as trees, animals, and rocks have souls and spirits. Ceremonies that the tribes celebrated include the winter and summer solstice Festivals of the Niman. The Apache were considered fierce warriors, and the Zuni gave them the name "Apachu" which means enemy. They often raided those who intruded their territory, but they managed to keep peaceful with the Pueblo Indians. The Apache reacted negatively to the Spaniards when New Mexico became a Spanish Colony. The tribe raided the Spaniards, and they eventually increased their size by capturing nearby tribes, Spaniards, and white people. These raids continued until the Westward Expansion of the United States. Many Apache fought against the U.S.A until they slowly died down and the tribes were forced to move onto reservations.

The picture below shows Spaniards fending off Apache Native Americans.

Religion- The Apache tribe believed in supernatural beings that lived among them. They believed that you could find these supernatural beings in rocks, mountains, and streams. Along with the supernatural beings, they believed in evil spirits and bad luck. They took frequent baths because they thought that baths cleansed their bodies from evil and bad luck. The Apache tribe also believed in Animism, and they thought their ancestors were trees, rocks, and mountains. They had Mountain Spirit Dances, and they played a "one-string bow". This instrument made an eerie sound, and they also played drums and rattles along with the stringed instrument.

The picture below shows an Apache Mountain Spirit Dance.

Government- Small groups or bands of Apache families traveled together under their own leader. Together these bands made up the Apache Nation. They would also sometimes camp next to each other. The bands didn't share a central government, and each band had their own treaties with the U.S government. Today at the Apache reservations, they have their own tribal council led by a chairperson, and they make decisions for the reservation.

The picture below shows a seal of the Apache Tribe.

Customs- The Apache tribe traveled in bands made up of families, but when they did come together to fight in great wars, a war chief was chosen. The war chief was chosen for his courage, wisdom, and generosity. Also when Apache men married, they would leave their parents' camp, and they would join and become a member of their wife's group. The Apache would pierce the ears of newborn, so that the newborn could hear and obey important things. When a child started walking, the Apache would celebrate by making the child follow a trail of pollen going east which meant that the child was going to lead a successful life. When Apache girls reached their early teens, they celebrated a coming of age ceremony which is supposed to strengthen the girl's ability to give birth to healthy children. This ceremony lasts for four days and four nights, and it is called the "Sunrise Ceremony".

The picture below shows a present-day Sunrise Ceremony.
