Students use the design cycle to collaboratively create a working solar boat to meet a design brief. Firstly, students will individually research and make initial designs. As a group they will then choose a design from the ones they drew that they believe will meet the brief. They will justify the design choice and set out a way to evaluate their final product. As a group students will plan, create and test their boat. To finish the students will individually evaluate their boat and reflect on the stages of the design cycle and focus on the things they were good at and things they could improve on.

Then as a class we programmed a few different types of games to get the concepts (Maze, Platformer, Drag and drop and Racing game).
The students were given a problem of designing a game for educational purposes. They were able to decide on the game style, audience, variables and design.
The students had to do a planning section which included: an explanation of the problem, how they intended the game to run, a decision tree (based on Conceptual Schemas), a set of instructions, a storyboard, a checklist of requirements, storyboard, sprite interaction, Start and end screen, levels, scoring, blocks used and variables.

Students then spent a few weeks designing, testing and revising their game and evaluating on their successes and issues.

Students made a final evaluation of their project and then we tested the game as a group and gave feedback. he students could choose to decide to take on the feedback or respond why they didn't

In the end it didn't matter if their were issues in the game's functionality as long as they could explain how they would try and solve the issue.

My students designed some great games, learnt some problem solving skills and learnt the basic concepts of programming language.

Examples include:
Prep- Weather unit- students spent time to explore and learn about the weather. They then created a sock puppet ( dressed in the right clothes etc) to be used in a weather report about their favourite weather. There was some heavily guided instruction when it came to the use of ICTs. Students used PowerPoint software to create a presentation for their weather report. Finding pictures to place into prepared slides.

Grade 2- The unit explored about Life and living. Students had a meal worm that they had to care for and each week they had to measure its length and record this data into a table. They also had to record what stage of its life cycle it was in. At the completion of the unit, students used this data to create a document of information. This was heavily guided with the use of ICTs to create a flow diagram to show the life cycle of a meal worm. Students had to create a title, insert shapes, write in text boxes and find and place images from goggle within the shapes.

Grade 5- Student explored light and had to build a light maze box and get their light to travel through the maze by positioning their mirrors in the right place. Because they are year 5 students the task was more iPBL focused. Now the students are going to use their light maze( picture of it) to code a sprite to travel the path that their torch light beam would of travelled.

Each group designed a method of sorting and then counting the amount. at the end we collaborated and decided which idea would work best, we justified the idea and then the group who's idea was picked had to teach the rest of the class.
2. For data collection introduction I created a lollie shop scenario. How might we help Mr. Lollie organise his collection of colourful jelly beans? I gave them each a bucket full of unifix blocks. By the end of the lesson each group had some sort of graph with information. We then took it one step further and made it a visual representation using excel.

Entrepreneurs for tomorrow program - yr 3-5. I have a select group currently working on a massive project. They were given a brief - How might we celebrate the school's 90th anniversary? So far we have come up with a variety of solutions and ideas. I'll post some pictures as we progress. This project is based on one of Young Zhao's Project Based Learning models.
Design and Technology:- Year 2. Who doesn't like to fold a paper plane? We started our lesson off by letting the kids make their own planes without any restrictions. Each child presented their plane and flew it across the hall. This flight was recorded on the iPad for later viewing. We then posed the question... How might we change or adapt a paper plane to make it fly faster and for longer? The Second Great Lesson involves the coming of life. This lesson revolves around the Timeline of Life, a long chart with pictures and information about microorganisms, plants, and animals that have lived (or now live) on the earth. The great diversity of life is emphasised, and special care is paid to the roles that each living thing does to contribute to life on earth.

This lesson leads to students developing their own inquiry question and then developing a plan to answer their question (perhaps). This could include the study of:

Biology: cells, organized groups, five kingdoms, specimens, dissection, observation, use of microscope
Botany: study of plants, classification, functions, parts of plants (seed, fruit, leaf, stem, root, flower), types of plants
Habitats: location, characteristics, food chains/webs, symbiosis, adaptation, ecosystems, conservation
Ancient Life: eras of the earth, evolution, extinction, fossil records, excavation
Animals: classification, needs, similarities/differences, human systems, nutrition, hygiene
Monera, Protista, and Fungi Kingdoms: what they are, classification, observation

In 2016, I trialled with the year 10 computer class the use of robots and drones to travel through a maze. The students could use an Ollie, Dash(from Dash and Dot set), a Sphero, or a Rolling Spider. They preprogrammed an algorithm into the robot drone from the Tickle app on the iPad using bluetooth. The algorithm was tested by changing the maze after the first success, to a different pattern. In my year 1 class students were given a design brief for the ‘Maker Space’ to build a tower of power. This was to help the teacher create more storage for all the books. They needed to build a tower in pairs, as tall as the book box and strong enough for some books to sit on. To link with length in Mathsthey needed to measure it each week with a choice of objects. Then reflect and change anything that didn't work. All towers were compared at the end to reinforce the language of length comparison and a chart completed with the measurements.

It was explained to students that due to recent weather events the bridge between their house and the local shopping centre had been destroyed. Students were then put into small groups and using the design process were required to create and build a suitable replacement bridge. For this the students were provided with straws, tape, string, and paper. Each group had to work collaboratively to undertake the project. At the conclusion of the lesson, students were able to test the durability of their bridge (which had to cover a 30 cm span) with a toy car.
