The term protist typically is used in reference to a eukaryote that is not a true animal, plant or fungus. Protists provide many benefits. However, they can also inflict harm particularly to human. Most harmful protists are classified as animal-like protists that act as parasites. For example, malaria is caused by plasmodium, a protist that uses mosquitoes as an intermittent host before infecting human. Once human is infected, common symptoms include fever, chills, sweating, headaches, nausea, vomiting and body aches.

This would include many kinds of fish and crustaceans, such as shrimp, crab, and barnacles. This presents why around 100 people die in the US each year from consuming raw or undercooked seafood. Vibrio bacteria has many different species and some are different than others. For example, vibrio vulnificus causes one in five people with this infection to die, while others require intensive care and possible limb amputation.

Once infected, this virus causes issues with the way blood clots, so eventually causes internal bleeding. The blood leaks from the smaller blood vessels into your body, and this virus also causes skin inflammation.

Athletes foot is a fungal infection that usually begins between the toes. Athlete's foot commonly occurs in people whose feet have become very sweaty while confined within tight-fitting shoes. Symptoms can include a scaly rash that usually causes itching, stinging, and burning. People with athlete's foot can have moist, raw skin between their toes. The fungi growth is caused by fungi that normally live on the skin, hair, and nails called dermatophytes. When the environment they live in gets warm and moist, they grow out of control and start to cause symptoms.

Viruses, while technically not living organisms (they require a living host to reproduce), are also considered microbes. Individual microbes cannot usually be seen with the naked eye; however, large collections of microbial cells can sometimes be seen. For example, bacteria can form visible colonies or ‘streaks’ when spread on gels containing nutrients for them. Additionally, mushrooms are reproductive structures made by some fungi, and we can certainly see the mold colonies that grow on old food. These visible structures are made up of millions of cells.

Hookworms are intestinal roundworms that feed off of blood. They are responsible for causing a type of infection called helminthiases. Hookworm eggs are passed on through the feces of someone who is infected. If an infected person defecates near in soil, or plants, and is used as a fertilizer later such as compost; the eggs are transferred into the fields and can mature. They then mature to a type of worm that is able to puncture the human skin. People are often infected by this in poorer countries. If someone is farming in the fields barefoot, the larvae can penetrate the skin and infect them. Most people don't notice symptoms however hookworms can cause gastrointestinal issues, and later blood loss and protein loss.

pinworm infections are among the most common worm infections. pinworms can spread easily and are most common in children from 5-10 years old. some symptoms of Pinworm include a strong urge to itch the anus, restless sleep and pain or a rash around the anus. you can become infected with pinworms by inhaling or consuming their microscopic eggs. the eggs will stay in the small intestine until they reach maturity. when mature they will move to the colon where they lay there eggs in the flaps of skin around the anus, it is this process of laying eggs around the anus that causes the itching sensation. when a person scratches their anus to alleviate the itching. the eggs are then transferred onto the fingers of the host where they can be deposited onto surfaces. the eggs can survive up to 3 weeks on a contaminated surface. the average pinworm can live up to 13 weeks under the proper conditions. in order to diagnose a pinworm infection doctors ask that the infected person apply a sticky tape to there anus in the morning in order to capture the pinworm eggs. mebendazol, albendazole, and pyrantel pamoate are often prescribed to treat pinworm infections.

People with the disease suffer from lymphedema (severe swelling of the arms or legs caused by damage of lymph nodes) and elephantiasis (enlargement and hardening of limbs or body parts due to obstruction of lymphatic vessels).

Asiatic Cholera is a disease caused by the Vibrio Cholerae bacteria, and can be contracted through consuming unclean water sources, as well as eating food coming from a contaminated aquatic environment. When infected, the host will experience severe abdominal pain, as well as severe diarrhea, often described as like "rice water". In more extreme cases, shock and seizures can occur, as well as total body dehydration. The bacteria resides in the intestine, and reproduces to further the infection.

Blood flukes also known as schistosomes is a type of flatworm that is able to live inside someone for many decades. After they hatch in water that is contaminated by feces, they are able to latch onto snails which are able to burrow their way through skin and into your body. Some of the symptoms include: fever, arthralgias (abdominal pain) bloody diarrhea, and hematuria.
