This graphic novel reflects on ideas involving human connection and what it means to have an interaction with someone. Readers watch as the main character, Nick, explores different relationships that come and go in his life, whether short or long term. He tries to bring purpose into conversations. Instead of just making simple small talk, he thinks of making or asking more complex statements. His belief is that if he were to do this with every person that comes into his life, then there is a meaningful connection made. These meaningful connections can bring an impact to each person's life. What things in today's society affect the root to a good relationship?

Mayurakshi presented this speech to her peers, letting them in on the effects of social media on personal relations. I will say she was very well spoken and seemed to know everything that she was talking about with confidence. People are wanting less face to face interaction. Social media is a good way to connect with family and friends, but those who are overly dependent on technology build meaningless relationships. More superficial relationships are made instead of real relationships. Texting is considered better than talking by teens, supplying pleasure and addictiveness to technology. Meaningful relationships involve a real bond with few people in your life. A person in a relationship like this will be supportive and want to talk to you often, creating a close bond and real moments with you. Spending quality time with people involves forgetting about your phone or having limited time on your phone, engaging in other activities without a phone, and getting to know each other better.

"Touchscreen" Essay

This essay analyzes a poem about the meaning of touch and what it has evolved into today with technology. Jones discusses the development in technology, connecting it to how it has impacted human connection. Everyone looks for meeting or talking to people through technology. Some even get too addicted to screens whether it is television or phones that they don't even get to explore their own connections in the real world. The meaning of touch involves allowing people to understand one another while touchscreen involves just touching a screen. Connections made between real touch and touchscreen are unreasonable as Jones explains in the essay. The development of technology in today's society has affected human connection in the real world so much that people barely even know how to interact with others at times.

American Psychological Association Article

The article depicts the side of today's society that prefers to connect with the media and how it is now incorporated into everyone's daily lives. Social displacement comes from technology use, replacing quality time spent with family and friends. Interactions with loved ones does not change with technology, it just shifts them onto the phone. Teens today had plenty of in-person social time associated with social media use. Technology is being used to spend time with peers even when they are not with one another. A statistic found in the article is 81% of teens use social media. Social media is a way for anyone to express themselves freely. Even with these positive outcomes, there are plenty of negatives to look at. Those risks include cyberbullying, inappropriate content, and the development of mental health issues. It is best to pay attention to superficial interactions online and recognize that they can be removed. The effect of technology on human connection relates to how people use it and whether or not they let themselves get sucked into the fake realities.

Art of Human Connection by Elizabeth Huey

Here is a piece of art painted by artist Elizabeth Huey which stuck out to me because I feel that it connects to the graphic novel in a way. In the story, Nick feels lost and confused in his world, just like this little girl seems in the painting. They are unsure of how to connect with the rest of society. Elizabeth Huey did an amazing job in portraying how there is no real human connection due to the development of technology. She put all of these people in one area, yet none of them of interacting. There is this new fear instilled in people that involves not wanting to talk to those around them. This is due to the fact that they are more comfortable conversing online. The art itself is so beautifully done in a way that really catches the eye. There are so many different elements that can be spotted if you pay close attention. The girl stands out to me because she seems to look sad and lonely. There is no context as to why. She also seems out of place with less vibrancy compared to the rest. Maybe she could represent the artist and her feelings toward human connection today.

Impact of Social Media - Blog and TedTalk

This blog highlights both the negative and positive effects of social media on human behavior along with a TedTalk in the middle of the page. Starting with the positive impacts, social media has done a great job in promoting social causes as well as motivating others to participate on spreading awareness for different causes. For some, social media reduces loneliness and isolation, interacting with people online rather than in person. There is positivity around diversity with different cultures having more representation throughout the media. On the other side of social media, there is oversharing of personal information, including less privacy for influencers or celebrities. With any user, there can be many privacy violations. Addictions are way too often created with phones, more specifically social media. There are ways to use social media responsibly in a way that can better society which is by being real or using real identities, using precautions, and limiting yourself. Parents can monitor children to ensure these things are being pursued. Overall, social media is a good way for any persona to express themselves and their own values while interacting with others online.

This short video highlights how much technology has effected communication and real social interactions. Common sense communication has become something that people are not able to do, therefore, switching to technology for communication instead. There is too much reliability on technology. People choose to focus more on daily interactions rather than remembering simple rules of social interaction. Technology is a barrier for real human closeness starting at a young age. Now, it is human nature to avoid social situations for many users. Self-esteem and mental health is strongly effected by the obsessive use of technology. It is better to not allow kids to have technology as such young ages because it plays into the role of the addiction to the technology.
