Do kids suffer or are they a part of the human trafficking in Kenya?

Child trafficking is very common in Kenya. Kids are sexually abused in family homes, in some cases, they are unable to leave their own home and are forced to cook, clean and take care of other peoples children and receive no wages for doing so. A lot of the times, nobody speaks up for these children and they have no other choice but to continue doing peoples dirty work and getting sexually and mentally abused. The affects of child trafficking are long lasting. As these children grow into adults, they now have severe mental disorders that they cannot afford to treat or get help with. Most children suffer from severe PTSD from early ages and the effects continue as they get older. Not only are kids sexually abused, but they are sold and treated as objects. In some cases, families will be in major debt and poverty and they end up selling their children to random people, just to afford for the rest of their families.

How much is made from human trafficking?

I'm sure all of us are aware of human trafficking and what it is. But have we ever thought about why people decide to commit this horrible crime? Majority of people say that the purpose of human trafficking is the profit. People make very large amounts of money, almost as much as a person who goes to work weekly at a high paying job. Every year, over 100 billion dollars are made from this crime. About one third of these earnings are from forced labour and the other third is made from rape and selling a human being.

Is anything being done to prevent it?

HAART (Awareness Against Human Trafficking)is a campaign that has been made to not only prevent human trafficking in Eastern Africa, but to educate people all around the world about this topic. HAART uses the United Nations Three P's: Prevention, Protection, Prosecution, Policy. The one that spoke to me the most out of the thee P's was Protection. According to HAART, anyone can be a victim of human trafficking in Kenya. Many people in Kenya are very poor and do not have much of a say in what they do. Due to lack of security, traffickers often abduct small children and even adults. Women, children and refugees are especially vulnerable because they are the ones that get disrespected the most in the community. The Nairobi metropolitan is a hot spot for trafficking. People get trafficked in and out of Nairobi, but because of the lack of awareness, nobody has done anything about it. HAART has set up many workshops near, and in Nairobi to prevent and raise awareness.

Many kids and adults in Kenya, Africa suffer from human trafficking in different forms. Some may be forced labour or sexual abuse but there are many more. In my project, I will be going into detail about three specific questions I have and researched to find the answers to. I went into depth about the profit made for this crime, making it one of the most high paying crime acts out there.
