Discovery Ed

We created mosaics in our discovery of Greece and Roman achievements. There was a lesson as well as a wonderful video on the architecture from that day and age. Each student created a drawing of the architecture, a drawing of a real person from that era and a mosaic. We are still working on the mosaics. It was a highly engaging lesson.

Weathering and Erosion

In the 12:1:1 class we learned about weathering and erosion. The students used paper fans and Kleenex to show how wind can cause erosion. The students learned prepositions . One lesson took 3 days but the class had fun.

Electromagnetism

The students and I watched the video on electromagnetism as a class. This gave us a new view of what it is. A lot of students didn't know what it was or how it worked! This led us into starting the science unit and understanding what it is- by having a hands on learning moment!

For this lesson, students were grouped in 4 groups, each group having a separate video. 2 groups were about space, and 2 groups were about the ocean, each group having a different video. Groups were to listen to the video as many times as needed in a 20 minute period to be able to write a summary of that video. When the 20 minutes was up, each member in the group shared their summaries with each other (5ish minutes). Once this was done, each member in the group was to find another member from another group and to ask what the summary was for their video. By the end of the lesson, students had 4 summaries, one from each video, only having watched one. Volunteers shared their summary from each group, and then we shared interesting facts from the videos. Students really like this activity and some even asked if during recess they could watch a video from a group they were not in!

In my 3rd grade class we are currently in Module 5- Animal Behaviors. One of the skills is using Text Features. I thought this would be a great opportunity to use Discovery Ed. I used Schoology as my platform to share out with students. This was new for my class- so the engagement piece was easy! We looked at different videos about text features, used a graphic organizer and the interactive matching "game". I loved that in DE I could easily search content and save it in a folder. The sharing on Schoology was very easy, as well for both myself and the kids. I will surely use DE for upcoming assignments!

After watching DE videos about the Oregon Trail, second graders eagerly recreated a transcontinental train. They worked together and learning about transportation during this era. The project brought history to life, helping them understand the challenges faced by early settlers. It sparked curiosity and deepened their appreciation for the historical impact of the transcontinental railroad.

The kids in my 12-1-1 room watched Sid The Science kid and learned about their 5 senses. We then tasted some sweet. salty, and sour things.

We tried out the Daily Fix it. When I assigned it to the kiddos, they could somehow see the answers on the next slide. Moving forward I used it just on my board and had the kiddos watch the video and jot down the corrections on an index card. It was a quick and easy way to see if they were identifying grammar/spelling/punctuation mistakes. I plan to explore more with it to see how they could use it and submit responses to me on their device. They liked the daily fact and quick video that related to the statements on the bottom :)
