The Spanish didn't want to have an English Queen as a Protestant and wanted a Catholic Queen, so when Elizabeth was Queen, the Spanish tried to overthrow her. Spanish didn't hated the Protestants even more when they destroyed their harbour and armada. The Spanish also like Mary a lot. The Spanish got very upset when the Babbington Plot went wrong and Elizabeth wasn't lenient to Mary. If Elizabeth had not executed Mary, then Mary could have tried to get the the Spanish to overthrow Elizabeth as the Queen and make Mary the Queen. This would make the Spanish happy because they would have a powerful ally and were able to invade other countries without backlash.
