Tesla himself called it an "electrical power transmission device." Tesla wanted to prove that electricity could be transmitted wirelessly.
At its Colorado Springs lab, Tesla had a huge 16-meter coil connected to an antenna at its disposal. The device was used to perform power transmission experiments.
Tesla's original idea in its experiments with these coils was always to find a way to transmit electrical power over a long distance without wiring.

Edison invents an electric AC chair and electrocutes dogs, cats, and even an elephant to prove that alternating current was dangerous. To neutralize this initiative, Tesla exposed himself to a CA that went through his body without causing him any harm. Faced with this test, Edison could do nothing and his prestige was momentarily eroded.

He continued to investigate this line, but his notes, instruments and efforts were lost in a fire in his laboratory in March 1895. At the end of the same year, the German Wilhelm Runtgen announced that he had discovered the x-rays, experimenting with a Tube of Crookes similar to that used by Tesla.
