Idea #1- Pictorial Dictionary
Every student makes a pictorial dictionary for themselves and adds a word to it every day. The student can either draw or cut out the picture from a magazine or cut and paste the image from the internet. Then they would write a sentence with that word.

Idea#2 Word Wheel
Create a game show type word wheel that can be spun. In the various slots on the wheel put different prompts for the students to expand their word knowledge. For example: Define it, act it out, use it in a sentence! Words could be chosen by the teacher, through a lesson, or independently through reading/class (words that are unfamiliar or interesting).

Idea#3 Have one big word such as “Chocolate” that students can make a lot of smaller words out of set a timer for 15 minutes and see how many words that can find. After show them how many there can be and let them write a sentence with the smaller word found.

Idea #1 Wheel of fortune: it's a fun game allow students to work together and have a fun game to learn how to spell different words

Idea #2 hang man: simple time filler game to use that also focuses on spelling a variety of words

idea #3 Mad libs: students will be given a word subject (adjective, verb, etc.) at random. Those words will then be added into sentences (which can turn out to be funny). this helps them to learn the word categories.

Idea #1: Mind/Word Map - have a word in the centre of the map and have students come up with other words they associate with that central word. For example, sandwich - students might think of bread, butter, cheese, egg, yummy, etc.

Idea #2: Popcorn words - students watch a video and then practice the popcorn words used in the video

Idea #3: Spinner game - students will be given a word off their word list and spin the spinner and do the task from the spinner (draw it, synonym, rhyme time, act it out, define it, use it in a sentence)

Teaching related words at the same time: integrating lessons to learn 2 similar/opposite words at the same time. For example: Night/Day, Salt/Pepper, Fall/Winter/Spring/Summer. This will give them a reference point of understanding and allow for a broader learning.

Word Cloud: Creating a visual reference point by writing down words that are already known, and branching out with synonyms and antonyms.

Through music: Using songs to learn new vocabulary is very successful. Students learn whole sentences, syntax, and grammar synonymously. Music can also be more memorable than something like a worksheet, or teacher talk lesson.

Idea # 1) Using context clues to help in word decoding (pointing out unfamiliar words in a story you are reading and encouraging students to decode the word meaning based on images, etc.)
Idea # 2) Word Box (Students write down unfamiliar words they have come across throughout the week and they pick one word they would like to put in the word box at the end of the week - the teacher chooses 5 to explain further to add to word wall)
Idea # 3) World Wall (Ties to the Word Box example) Raises word awareness and a reference point/ visual aid for students to deepen their knowledge of language.

-Synonym and Antonym Game: The teacher says a word that is easily defined and understood by the students based on their grade level. Then asks teams of students to come up with a synonym and an antonym for the given word.
-Charades: The teacher provides a slideshow with different words for students to read. The students would then have to try to act out the word provided. This can also help with students social emotional learning as they may act out emotions that accompany the words.
-Sight Word Word Search: The students will be provided with sight word word searches in order to find familiar words. This contributes to word recognition.
-Crosswords: The students will be given a crossword puzzle to solve in order to work with the definitions of words. It allows students to work on both recall of words and word recognition.

Idea #1: There, Their and They're knowledge - Write 6 different sentences on the board and the class/students will have to fill in which there to use. Ex. _____ (their) shirts are pink. Ex. 2. We know _____ (they're) ______ (there).

Idea #2: Adjectives and Vocabulary expansion - Have a class walk outside/forest and have the students observe sights, sounds, smell, thoughts and feelings. The students can then brainstorm adjectives together to think of creative words to create a writing reflection.

Idea #3: Word (all nouns or verbs, etc) Scavenger hunt - Label things around the class that is every letter of the alphabet. Depending on the student level, the teacher can label or the students can (students either find or write the words).

We wanted to incorporate ideas of storytelling as it is essential to comprehending new words and learning structure in sentence writing. Aspects of storytelling come from music, art, and the written word. This was aimed at the Grade 1-3 classrooms.

Introductory Activity – Free Writing

Ask open-ended questions as a warm-up (What did they do this weekend?

Activity 1 (word matching): *We are teaching the word through pronunciation, translation, and images.

There will be a collection of picture cards. The teacher will pick one picture card (e.g. a picture of a treasure box) and post it on the whiteboard as an example. After, students will break out into groups and do it on their own. For example, find a card that says "treasure" in English, another card that says "treasure" in French, and another card that has the pronunciation for the word "treasure."

Activity 2 (word association): *Text to world connections, text to self connections, and text to text connections.

Students will be given a sheet with a word written in bubble letters. For example, "friends" or "community" or "job." Students are to write words that are related and/or draw images of the word or things related to the word. At the bottom of the page, students will be provided with an area to write what the word means to them.

Activity 3 (anchor chart): *Text to world and text to self.

On a piece of chart paper, divide the paper into 4 blocks. Each block will contain a major element of a fiction book (characters, setting, problems, solution). Students will write down ideas of characters, setting, problems, and solutions that they could find in a picture book, or ones they have come across in a book they've read before. Students are also encouraged to draw an image associated with the ideas they come up with. Drawing images can help them remember the words by associating the words to a visual representation.

Additionally: teaching one word at a time each day and doing this activity one word at a time.

Activity 2: Word bingo - give students a bingo card with different words on it; teacher can read out the different words and students fill in their bingo cards as the words pop up. As students get older, the bingo cards can be based on a theme and short riddles can be made where the words are the answers

Activity 3: Comic strip vocabulary: students make a comic strip using the high-frequency words they are learning. This can be a fill in the blank activity or for older grades, students can make their own activity
