My role models in my life that help guide me and influence me are my parents, especially my dad. My dad guides me through dark times and always knows what’s best for me. My dad keeps me healthy and gives me the drive to exercise, whether it is playing sports or lifting weights with him. He also keeps my grades in check, and whenever I start to get missed assignments or bad grades, my dad is on me about how I am studying and why I am not completing my assignments. My parents both care so much about me, and my dad helps guide me in the best direction in life.

The top five qualities I most admire in other people are loyalty, kindness, friendliness, selflessness, and leadership. I believe if a person is loyal to a friend, family, or lover, their path of their life would be a great one. If a person has the quality of kindness, friendliness, and selflessness, they care about their loved ones, and put those people before them.

Sonny has mixed feelings and thoughts on about family and the role family has on one’s life because he believes that half of his family does not care about him, and the other half does. Sonny’s father, Homer Sr, has a dislike for Sonny because he is not as perfect as his brother, Jim. Sonny’s father favorites Jim because he is the popular football player, and Sonny feels like his father does not appreciate him at all. Clear evidence of this is when Sonny and his mother were having a conversation about Sonny’s future and how his dad will give him a low level job, and Sonny asks, “Why doesn’t Dad like me?” (Hickam 43). Sonny’s father appears to totally neglect Sonny, and give him a bad time for not being like Jim. Sonny defines the role family has on a person’s life as a controlling one, giving no freedom of choice of what a person wants to do. During the launch of Sputnik, Sonny finally figures out what his passion is: building and launching rockets. But because Homer Sr. is the superintendent of the Coalwood mine, he believes the only job for Sonny is a low-level clerk for the superintendent. A good example of Homer Sr. demanding Sonny to stop making rockets is when Homer Sr. exclaims, “Didn’t I tell you not to do this again?” (Hickam 72).
