The two young brothers Zach and Gray visit their aunt Claire, who also happens to be a manager at Jurassic World, which is a big and comprehensive dinosaur theme park located off the coast of Costa Rica. However, Claire is too busy climbing the corporate ladder and is initially very busy to be with the kids so she gives them an introduction to the place and tells her assistant Zara to be with them. Simon Masrani, the park's owner arrives and together, they go to special enclosure to make Claire see the Indominus Rex, a new hybrid dinosaur that has been made by genetic modification. They have used a Tyrannosaurus Rex and spliced genes from Velociraptors and other kinds of dinosaurs with it. The immediate impression is that they don't really know the temperament of this new beast that they have created. Masrani tells Claire that she should bring Owen over, as Owen is an expert on dinosaurs.

Owen, who is feeding his velociraptors and teaching them to obey orders is met by Vic Hoskins, who is the head of InGen security. Hoskins tries to impress on Owen the importance of using the raptors as weapons, but Owen will have none of that. Later, Owen rescues a new staff member from being eaten alive by the raptors, when he falls into their pit. The way the raptors behave proves that the animals are very much in line with their instinct and not like house puppies. After Claire meets Owen, she takes him to the Indominus Rex enclosure purportedly to show him the new dinosaur. But a thermoscan check (they have a sensor attached on the animal) reveals nothing, leading them to believe that the Indominus has jumped the wall and escaped. Owen and two others enter the enclosure to examine the claw marks that the creature made on the wall but it turns out that the creature is still in the enclosure. Claire, who was monitoring things, warns Owen and the other two to exit immediately. But the Indominus appears and attacks them, killing one of the staff. Owen and the other staff member escape the containment door just as it's closing but the Indominus crashes through it. The other staff member is killed when the Indominus sniffs out that individual. Owen escaped being scented out by dousing himself in petrol from under the car he is hiding in.

Soon after this, Masrani sends a special squad to apprehend the escaped dinosaur, but find that she has clawed out the tracking implant. The squad are fooled by its adaptive camouflage and kills all of the team. Gray and Zach who had given Zara the slip, head into dangerous territory in the park inside a gyrosphere, not knowing that the Indominus is on the loose.

Claire and Owen meanwhile make their own discovery that the Indominus is killing other dinosaurs for sport and not for food, in order to establish himself as apex predator. Meanwhile, Masrani has his helicopter outfitted with a minion and flies after the Indominus,who smashes into the Jurassic World Aviary, thereby freeing pteranodons and dimorphodons, who attack the helicopter and cause it to crash into the aviary, killing Masrani and crew and freeing the dangerous animals inside.

Zach and Gray, in a jeep that they commandeered are found by Zara when they drive back to the park. Zara is killed by one of the pteranodon, dropped into a lagoon holding a massive mosasaur, who eats both Zara and the pteranodon that dives in, attempting to carry her. Owen is attacked by a Dimorphodon but Claire saves him by shooting it and they then finally kiss, even as Claire is reunited with her nephews.

With Masrani dead, Hoskins takes command of Jurassic World and decides that they will use the velociraptors to find and kill the Indominus. Owen reluctantly agrees to help and releases the raptors to locate it while following them on various vehicles. They find it but it appears to communicate with the raptors. Owen realizes that the Indominus was made by also using Velociraptor genetic material, the raptors turn on the team and begin killing the soldiers while the Indominus escapes. Owen is confronted by one of the raptors and it seems to recognise him but it is killed by a rocket. Barry hides in a hollow log while Blue attempts to get to him but Owen distracts it and rides off on his motorcycle. Claire, Zach and Gray are waiting in a truck but are quickly attacked by raptors, they drive away until they meet up with Owen and drive back to the park while the raptors follow after the Indominus.

Meanwhile, Hoskins evacuates the place with chief scientist Dr Wu, taking along various embryos for Hoskins' use. evacuating by helicopter with the embryos. After entering the innovation centre, Owen, Claire, Zach and Gray find Hoskins packing up the laboratory and he discloses that they plan to turn the indominus into a weapon to be used in wars but before he can continue he is killed by a velociraptor. Owen, Claire, Zach and Gray escape but find themselves cornered by the three remaining raptors outside. Owen approaches Blue, and reestablishes his connection with the raptors when the Indominus arrives and Blue attempts to kill it but is thrown against a wall, the other two raptors attack it and Owen begins shooting it while Claire, Zach and Gray hide in a gift shop. The raptors are quickly killed by the indominus and Gray realises that they do not have the power to defeat the Indominus so Claire grabs a flare and gets Lowery to open the Tyrannosaurus enclosure, she lights the flare and lures the Tyrannosaurus into a fight with the Indominus. The Tyrannosaurus is quickly overpowered but before the Indominus can kill it, Blue reappears and attacks the Indominus. The Tyrannosaurus and Blue fight the indominus until it is almost defeated, but before it can regroup, the mosasaur emerges from the lagoon and drags the dinosaur down into the deep.

The Tyrannosaurus and one remaining Velociraptor then head off and Owens, Claire and the two kids are evacuated to Costa Rica. Zach and Gray are met by their mum even as we then see a T Rex emit a loud roar, back in the jungle
