For a movie script or a book that has been turned into one there are usually extensive descriptions and the Casting Director bases their choice on a mix of looks, voice, acting style and type. However for a play, much is left to the imagination and it falls to the Casting Director to pick the embodiment of names and titles, character traits only hinted at, and they have the freedom to craft the perception they wish to create in the audience.

Artist Statements

While spectators might attempt to interpret visual works independently, artists often want to provide additional context to their art pieces. An artist statement describes what a creator made and why they made it. By including this statement with your pieces, you can better connect with your audience.

Key features of an artist statement include:

Your name

Your media, such as clay, video, paintings, textiles or plastic

Your reason for choosing to make this art

Your process for creating the art

Your inspirations

EXAMPLE

Life is a fragile, beautiful thing. I work within this fragility to craft original, handmade heirloom pieces to last for generations. I have been attracted to the idea of jewelry as art since I was a child, inspired by my grandmother's small but deeply meaningful collection of one-of-a-kind pieces brought to America with her from Ukraine. My jewelry line balances the delicacy of life and the resiliency within each of us. I use the minimal yet powerful: a thin gold strand, a single diamond. Simple but never basic.

                                         HOW TO

1. Examine your art

Look at your art and identify the words and emotions that come to mind. You can then explore these features and their significance. Also, think about what people have said about your work. Similar comments may point to a theme in how others interpret your work.

2. Consider your inspiration

Consider how you started making your art. Writing your creation's origin story and any meaningful incidents that led you to where you ended up may be helpful. You may have ben inspired by a person, an event or an experience. Writing this out in detail can help you communicate this inspiration clearly. You can also list your significant influences.

3. Define your message

Think about what you want people to feel when they see your art. This is different for every artist. Some artists want people to think critically about a topic, while others want people to laugh. Some reactions artists aim for can include joy, anger, sadness, contemplation and wonder. Consider what you'd like people to remember about your work.

4. Remember your audience

Use what you know of your audience to help guide your writing. Since your statement is part of a creative endeavour in the theatre, consider who will be reading it and how you can make it relevant to them.
