Jason Reynolds is a children's and young adult author. He writes about challenges that children may experience in their lives. Racism, economic inequity, police brutality, and grief are all topics that Reynolds feels comfortable including in his books. According to the MacArthur Foundation, "The characters featured in his fiction forge friendships, discover talents, act out, seek forgiveness, face fears, and care for parents with cancer." Reynolds has won numerous awards for his books. Reynolds also works to inspire young readers by traveling to meet and talk. He wants to inspire them to tell their own stories.

Reynolds has expanded children's and young adult literacy to cover life events that other authors shy away from. He writes about his experiences as a black boy from Oxon Hill, Maryland. As a child he noticed that there were not a lot of literature about children who grew up in neighborhoods like himself. As an author he injects themes that many children, like himself, experienced growing up. He speaks at schools, libraries and community centers to try to inspire children to see themselves in literature and to share their stories as he has. He wants children to realize that writing is a way for them to share their voice.

Reynolds books are original. He writes poetry, fiction and nonfiction books. He has written novels, graphic novels and picture books. Reynolds' books themes are original and unlike many other books on the market today and in the past. He is a recipient of a Newbery Honor, a Printz Honor, an NAACP Image Award, and multiple Coretta Scott King honors, Reynolds is also the 2020-2022 National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature. Reynolds website states that he is currently working on new books.

Jason Reynolds enjoys writing stories for children and young adults. In the video Reynolds talks about how he wrote his first novel and how he became a young adult novel. Reynolds discusses how the characters that he writes about are black and you can tell that he enjoys creating books about these characters. He "chooses to create books for children." He finds writing books for children to be "fulfilling" and "rewarding."
