Students are identified by three main groups: physical disabilities, difficulties with thinking, and social, behavioral, or emotional problems. Physical disabilities include problems using their senses, difficulty writing, muscle spasticity, seizures, difficulty walking, and being paralyzed on one or both sides of their body. Students with difficulty thinking are identified with short-term and long-term memory issues, difficulty concentrating, and short attention spans. Social, behavioral, or emotional problems include mood changes, depression, anxiety, and difficulty controlling emotions.
Assessments used to diagnose TBI are imaging tests and the Glasgow coma scale. Computerized tomography (CT) and Magnetic resonance imaging take X-rays and detailed images from magnets/radio waves to get a clear look at the damage that has occurred to the brain. Tests for TBI also include speech, language, social communication skills, swallowing abilities, lung function, cognition, and neuropsychological tests.
Students suffering from TBI receive their education in traditional public schools that provide special education that caters to helping students with disabilities.
