Favorite character : Our favorite character is Maddie and Az because they are one of the rare characters that are genuinely kind. Because as we know, after discovering the intentions of the city, they transformed into rebels and created the Smoke to welcome the young teens who are opressed and who want to live a different life. And it is easy to see that they understand in which situation they are in the book like : "Just masses of smiling pretties, and a few people left to run things".

Least favorite character :

Our least favorite in the novel is Dr Cable. She is our least favorite character because she is cold and has no heart. It almost feels like she doesn't feel anything, except maybe power. She doesn't consider the feelings of others as important, and uses these feelings against them. Overall, she is a good villain, but on a human standpoint, she is our least favorite character. The following quote from Dr. Cable proves our point: " Then I'll make you a promise too, Tally Youngblood. Until you do help us, to the very best of your ability, you will never be pretty [...] You can die ugly, for all I care" This quote shows that Dr. Cable doesn't care about Tally, and only uses her as a way to reach her objective.

This time is the good one ! Everybody knows about Dr Cable's will to find the wanderers that went in the Smoke. After a long period in the dark, the unknown and the peace, Dr Cable’s troops invaded the smoke’s territory and took every person in there. After an interview with Dr Cable, she told us that the certain ugly that couldn’t get pretty unless she would help them finally decide to do so and helped Dr Cable's unit to find the Smoke’s habitants. She told us that they are in good hands and we hopefully trust her organization and that the poor and lost teens will become pretty and join the pretties town !

Welcome to the smoke report.

We have some very good news today! Yesterday, Tally Youngblood and David infiltrated the special circumstances headquarters and rescued many smokies that were held captive According to our information, they entered the building using bungee jackets to avoid the sensors. They then went down into the building to try to find the detention center. When they were about to deliver their friends, they came face to face with Dr. Cable, the head of special circumstances that had orchestrated the attack on the smoke. Using surprise, they managed to knock her out. At the same time, Shay, who had been turned into a pretty, arrived. She was shocked but happy to see her friends, and decided to accompany them in their escape. They freed all the people they could find, and then made their escape using hover-boards. To ensure their safety, they haven't disclosed to us their location, but insist that they are safe.

Friendship : Friendship is an important theme in the book. As we can see, there are many friendships in the novel like Tally and Peris, Tally and Shay, Shay and David, the Smoke, etc. Tally and Shay is one of the best examples I think because at the beginning, they are like any young kids that are having fun but as the story goes Shay and Tally's relationship degraded and that's when Shay went in the Smoke. Tally then understood that she felt alone without a friend and that shows how much friendship is important because when you have a friend that you love, you have to be aware that the feeling of being lonely occurs more pain. Also, Tally had the mission to report the Smoke but the feeling of friendship with all the smokies increased and she didn't want to report them to Dr Cable.

Appearance : Appearance is one the major theme because all the different parts of society in Uglies world is defined by the appearance. The ones that are priorized are the pretties one and the uglies live in the misery. We can also see that uglies like Tally are really stressed out about how they will look like after the surgery but we also see others like Shay who doesn't want to be pretty and live like an independant human, that's where the conflict appears, the life of a chained and pretty human or the life or a independant ugly person. There's Maddy and Az too that chose to abandon the life of pretty in the beautiful city to reunite uglies and pretties that want to live like independants humans where pretties people don't have to be protected and chained and uglies don't have to be seen like peasants.

Conflicts
Shay vs Tally :
At first, Tally and Shay are really good friends, and they get along very well. However, as the story advances, they begin to distance themselves from each other. Then, when Tally "steals" Shay's boyfriend David, the relationship between the two finally goes sour. Shay despises Tally because Tally stole David from her. Tally, her, doesn't want to be in conflict with her friend, and ties to calm her down, but Shay still hates her. In the end, Shay and tally will never be friends again, and shay still hates Tally. The following quote from the book summarizes perfectly the conflict: "«Are you blind Croy? Look around you! She did this!» Tally took a deep breath and forced herself to look at Shay. Hr friend's eyes burned with hatred"
Smokies vs Special circumstances:
When it comes to the different conflicts in the novel, the smokies vs special circumstances is definitely one of the easiest to identify. According to the authorities of the city, the smoke in itself is illegal, therefore it is special circumstances's job to find and arrest the smokies. There is no possibility for reconciliation between the two parties, because their ways of seeing the world had fundamentally opposed. The following quote illustrates the opposition between the smokies and special circumstances: "He lay on his back, his head turned at an angle that Tally instantly knew was utterly wrong. His fingers were clenched, the nails bloody from clawing at someone. He must have fought back to distract them"
This quote shows that any smoky that dares to fight back the special circumstance gets killed for resisting, which shows the extreme resumes special circumstances is willing to apply to get rid of the smokies.

We can compare Tally's and Shay's personnalities throughout the novel. At the beggining of the book, Shay and Tally have a lot of things in common, we can compare them because they like the same thing, play jokes on other person, like an adventurous life, going out, use the hoverboard. But as we continue through the novel, their path begins to separate, Tally wants to become pretty and Shay wants to live a free life by being ugly, the contrast then shows up. When Tally joins the Smoke, she reconciliates with Shay but then they separate themselves another time due to David. We can then see that they are not that similar than in the begginning of the book when we could compare the two girls by their taste and their hobbies, they now show differents goals and point of view.

What I disliked the most was seing Shay turned into a pretty. I disliked this moment because Shay was one the few characters that really wanted to be free and not being turned into a pretty, just live a free life and stay ugly. But when I saw Shay being turned into a pretty and acting like everything was fine and that she just went to a party (page 365-366) I just didn't know what to think. I felt something familiar with Shay like if she was my friend too and seeing her acting like a real pretty was a bit heart-breaking

The antagonist in the story is clearly Dr Cable. She always gets in the way of Tally, and does everything to ruin the lives of the smokies. Dr Cable, also uses intimidation tactics on Tally to reach her end, which demonstrates that she is the real villain of the book. It is hard to find any positive qualities on her. We could perhaps say that she does everything to reach her goal, but sadly she uses this quality to harm the peaceful lives off the smokies. If we compare Dr Cable to other the other characters, we can notice that she opposes many characters, but I believe that she realy antagonizes Maddy and Az. Madddy and Az are the ones who first rebbeled against the authorities of the city. They fought back by creating the smoke. They are also good parents, because they love David with all their heart. On the opposite side, Dr Cable wants to make sure all rebels are suppressed. She represents the authorities of the city. She doesn't love or care about anything, except maybe the power she gets for being leader of special circumstances.

The book "Uglies" is a very interesting novel that i would definitely recommend to anyone interested in dystopian literature. The themes explored in this book are also reminiscent of realities we face today. The pressure of being as perfect as possible is very present even in our world, and, like many dystopian books, explores what would happen if one aspect of our world was taken to the extreme. Mr. Westerfield does this with ease, showing to us the negative effects of all being pretty ; uniformity and then subordination. Since all the "Pretty" people look alike and think alike, it is easy for independent people to rule with an iron fist. The characters of the book are also very interesting, particularly Tally an Shay. As an example, Tally starts out beveling everything the city says, hating herself and wanting to become pretty, as shown by this quote: And her expression turning horrified as she beheld her own appearance. «That's you Tally, forever» «Turn it off...»" . With the story moving forward, she changes her mind, and considers her true home to be the smoke, and not the city. Like many other characters, she is a multi-dimensional character, and this makes the story much more interesting. In the end, I would recommend this story because it offers a very captivating read, with very innovative themes, an interesting plot and good characters.

The door slid open, and Dr. Cable's malevolent voice poured out. "You're simply not trying hard enough. You just have to convince her that ---"
"Dr. Cab...,"
Tally didn't have time to finish her sentence. In one movement, Dr Cable had knocked her to the ground, and was now facing David.
It only took a fraction of a second for him to be brushed away. Tally, who was half conscious, spotted Shay behind her aggressor. She had been turned pretty. Her face was perfectly symmetric, without a hint of ever being normal. On that beautiful face, she had a look of complete shock. No words were spoken. Tally and David were quickly handcuffed, and Tally finally passed out.

She woke up in a cell in what she could only imagine was the detention center of the facility. She was alone, with no sign of David or Dr. Cable. However, the later soon arrived, and took her to a small grey room similar to the one she was brought in during her first visit at the special circumstances headquarters. Dr. Cable smoke first:
"Honestly, I find it very impressive that you managed to enter this building undetected. Maybe you can tell me how you did it?"
"You already know my answer to this question" Tally responded.
"Of course I do, but soon you will change your mind."
"Good luck with that"
"You might just be surprised. Listen, I'll cut straight to the point, your operation is in 30 minutes. Soon, you will join your friend Shay in New Pretty Town."
Tally closed her eyes. There was no escaping this.
Dr. Cable continued:
"As for your friend, he will soon have an operation as well, but his will be different. He isn't a city child like you, and simply turning him pretty might not be enough. Enough said, you have to prepare for your operation. Goodbye forever, Tally."
Tally was brought to the operation room. She was forcefully installed in a special chair. A man with a white lab coat injected her with a brown liquid. This was it. There was no coming back from this. Tally though of the time when she dreamed of this moment. It was long gone, and now she hated every second of it. She though of David, wondering what Dr Cable implied when she said "a different operation". This couldn't mean anything good. She felt the anesthetic starting to have an effect. She finally fell asleep for one last time as herself, as nothing would be the same after the Doctors had done heir jobs.
