Any person who regularly uses information technology is considered a digital citizen. A digital citizen has rights and responsibilities regarding their activities online, just like any other type of citizen. This holds true for intentional actions like lending a hand to others and refraining from cyberbullying. However, it also covers unintentional actions such as distributing false material without verifying its accuracy. To put it briefly, being a good and helpful online citizen is what it means to be a good digital citizen.

Discuss their responses.

Show students a picture of a computer or a device and ask them how they use it. Engage them in a conversation about their experiences using technology.

Introduction to New Material:

Explain to students that just like we have rules for how to behave in classrooms and on the playground, there are also rules for how to behave online.

Share the definition of netiquette and digital citizenship, using simple and age-appropriate language.

Show students visual examples of good netiquette and digital citizenship behaviors, such as using kind words, asking for permission before sharing someone's picture, and being respectful in online discussions.

Anticipate a common misconception: Some students may think that everything they do online is private and can't affect others.
Why the learning and practice of netiquette and being a good digital citizen is important at all ages: Zoe Sisselman

There are various reasons why the learning and practicing of netiquette and being a good citizen is important for children of all ages. Technology is constantly developing especially now. Students are exposed to a lot of technology both at home and school and digital citizenship gives the students foundational knowledge about how to behave responsibly on the internet so that they don't make irreversible mistakes. Teaching children about the do's and don'ts at a young age is how we can promote good digital citizenship.

Netiquette focuses on the responsible rules that go along with communicating on the internet. With the vast amounts of technology it is extremely important that children of all ages know how to be responsible on the internet. This includes things like not cyberbullying which can become a very dangerous thing especially among school-aged children. Social media can effect mental health among students too and digital citizenship and netiquette can help block out some of the unnecessary stress that comes along with posting on the internet. Teaching students to protect themselves on the internet can prevent them from falling victim to the dangers of the internet world.

Reflection- Zoe Sisselman:

Before doing this project, I did not know much about digital citizenship and netiquette. I do not remember learning about these principles in school. I primarily remember learning about cyberbullying and it being emphasized throughout my years in school. I learned through experience over the years and sometimes it was hard to navigate these things by myself especially due to the growth of social media and its prominence. Prior to doing this project, I had very little knowledge about digital citizenship and netiquette. The main internet safety thing that I was taught was in regard to thinking before you post. After looking over various forms of research, I now have a more in-depth understanding about what these two principles are and how to properly educate my future students about them.

Through my research for this project, I learned that cyberbullying is not the only aspect associated with digital citizenship and netiquette. Things like not posting your address, or phone number, not accepting unreliable emails or files, and many more. This research has confirmed how important it is to educate children of all ages about the principles of netiquette and digital citizenship. Technology is constantly evolving and although I was responsible on the internet and was lucky enough to not experience anything dangerous, children now may have an increased risk of those dangers. I never thought about how important it is to educate students on digital citizenship and netiquette until I was educated on them myself.

My research has confirmed that as a teacher it is extremely important to make it a point to properly educate students on these topics. Teaching them the proper way to behave and be responsible on the internet can be very beneficial to them both now and in the future. By teaching about these principles teachers can help prevent their students from being involved in anything dangerous or anything that can be detrimental to their lives in general.

Before starting this project, I had heard about the terms 'digital citizenship' and 'netiquette' while working at the ITS help service desk at SUNY Oneonta for the past year. Unfortunately, I never learned about digital safety in school or while growing up. However, over time, while using the internet, I learned basic rules such as avoiding sketchy websites, refraining from talking to strangers online, using proper grammar and vocabulary, avoiding viruses, and being respectful to others through trial and error. I also realized how important it is to think about all the actions we do online since a digital footprint exists. It is very scary because one mistake online can follow you forever and it could ruin your reputation. Things like this are common in today's world especially with social media because with social media you can share it with millions of people in seconds.

Prior to this I never thought about how easily accessible the internet is to children. We need to teach young kids how to be safe on the internet to prevent any harm to them. While working at ITS, I have seen people of all ages get viruses and get involved in phishing scams, which is very scary. Now, imagining a little one who doesn't know how dangerous the online world could be is terrifying. Technology is heavily involved in today's world, and we can't just avoid it. However, we can teach kids how to be safe while using it. So, kids, the basic rules of the internet, even if they are common sense, can always prevent mistakes because for somebody it might not be common sense until it's mentioned. Especially some of these kids don't know any better until its taught to them. I also never really took heavy consideration on what I posted on my social platforms because I never put much thought behind how many people can access my profiles. People should also be mindful of the posts we share online because they can always be seen from different perspectives that we might not see and end up hurting someone. It's important to remember that once something is posted, it's there forever, even if you delete it, it can follow you. It is also important to teach children this because a mistake from when their young can follow somebody for a long time even if they realize it was a mistake

Overall, this project reinforced the importance of teaching simple things like online rules to children. Especially since most teachers use technology in the classroom, it is important to be mindful and be a good role model for them. Another important thing is to teach children the dangers and risks of the online world, while still showing them that it can still be a fun and safe place if used right. Lastly, it's essential to be aware of your digital footprint as a teacher or a student since it can stay there forever and follow you. So, it's important to think before posting anything on the internet and remember to be kind and respectful while doing so.
