Lorsqu'un évènement survenant dans la réalité est détecté par un capteur connecté à la carte MaKey MaKey elle expédie à l'ordinateur, via USB, un signal correspondant à une pression sur une touche (« key », en anglais) du clavier ou de la souris prédéterminée (par un câblage simple). Tout est disposé de sorte que cela déclenche au moins un traitement assuré par un logiciel, sans nécessiter de nouveau programme ni d'autre matériel que la carte MaKey MaKey.
