He was so helpful because he let illiterate people know the corruption that was taking place in politics. Being an African American, she fought against the racism that they faced, specifically the practices of lynching. Wells was a leader of the Civil Rights Movement and helped in paving the path to achieving equality for African Americans. Through investigating, writing newspaper articles, Ida B. Wells was the most outspoken suffragist, traveling to many places to expose the immoralities of lynching.

I chose Jacob RIis over the other five muckrakers because of the impact he made to the largest number of people. Since the majority of the country was poor, by photographing and spreading awareness/pressures on the government to invoke changes and reform, he made the biggest difference in the most number of lives. Furthermore, it correctly depicts the situation as the photos are concrete evidence, rather than fictional stories which were interpretative. Essentially, since a large number of people could not read, photos would be the most effective at inciting change. The last reason I chose Jacob Riis is because this brought a direct change to their physical lives rather than other reforms which could be ignored by other members of society.

My nominee for the Progressive Era Hall of Fame is Jacob Riis. Jacob Riis deserves to be in the Hall of Fame because he raised awareness to an issue that many did not think about or consider before. Due to the fact that many of the educated men during this time period were rich, the horrible living conditions that the lower class members lived in was just an afterthought and not really thought of. However, Jacob Riis used his platform to raise awareness about the almost inhumane conditions that many poor members of society were living in. Another reason why he should be in the Hall of Fame is because he introduced a unique way to tell stories and report aspects of life. Instead of using the typical way of typing stories and writing them, Jacob Riis used photographs, and through this way was he not only able to tell stories to the rich, but also the poor, as images can translate to both the educated and uneducated.

Ida B. Wells was the most influential reformer because she exposed the civil injustices against African Americans. Through the "Lynch Laws in All Its Phases," Wells explained how lynching contributed to racism, hate, and the marginalization of a whole group of Americans. Wells also diligently worked to improve the rights of all African Americans by being an integral figure in many groups that paved the way for African American justice.

Ida B. Wells had the most significant impact over the other 5 Muckrakers because her actions had the most direct affect on American life. She founded the National Association of Colored Women which united African American women to stand up for their civil rights. She also initiated an Anti-Lynching campaign in response to the acts of violence she's personally witnessed. She also created the first African American kindergarten in her community. All her actions had more effect than merely drawing cartoons or writing novels, things not everyone has access to.

Thomas Nast
I believe that Thomas Nast spurred the biggest impact on Americans during the time of the Progressive Era as his work of political cartoons was capable of creating action for reforms. For most reformers, their actions would take time before eventually making an upset as their novels had not been widely publicized at the time. Thomas Nast had already gained his credibility and popularity through his work in the Harpers Weekly labeling him as the “Father of American Cartoon”. With his power of illustrations, he criticized the corruption and power of the political machines, specifically towards William M. Tweed. Tweed had total control of the Democratic Party in New York, which had rigged elections and bribed officials through their countless amount of money. With Nast’s illustrations, he was capable of upsetting the leader of the party enough so that he was bribed of not continuing the illustrations and fleeing the country, yet instead it forced Tweed to leave the nation. Without the departure of Tweed, the politcal machine corrupting most of the American elections and monopolies had finally been taken down causing the first real action from a reformer.

By a single book, The Jungle, he influenced T. This relates to our Civic Action Project as many groups will simply publicize, which is not enough to actually cause change. Knowing a problem exists is okay, but doing something about it is better.

While other muckrakers focused on topics that applied only to the United States, The Jungle became an international best seller and was published in 17 languages (had impact on entire world). Europe had also been obsessed with industrialization during this time and experienced epidemics of cholera and high mortality rates due to unsanitary conditions, so Sinclair’s ideas would apply to it also.

He took an active approach to demanding social equality for African Americans, and I believe that through his efforts, results could more easily be achieved, as opposed to more passive efforts. In addition, he was a co-founder to the NAACP, in which he also served as the editor for its magazine. DuBois even advocated for women's rights and tried to free African colonies from European powers.

Not as many other activists concentrated on birth control as they did other common topics such as African American and laborers/farmers' rights. To advocate for women was difficult in itself, and she went as far as to take a stand for birth control, which was an even greater risk. In 1916 Sanger opened the first birth control clinic and even initiated national reform through the US Court of Appeals later allowing, in 1936, the US importation of birth control devices. While more broad topics such as African American equality took much longer to tend to, Sanger is not as much recognized as she appealed to upper courts and was able to initiate reform faster.

Through this, she helped lead the Anti-Lynching Movement in 1892 along with Tom Moss, Calvin McDowell, and Will Stewart. In 1893, she also published "A Red Record," which raised awareness on these racist acts and her work was supported by Frederick Douglass.

Thomas Nast was an influential reformer by creating cartoons for the public to see. He was able to reveal the corrupted dealings of the politicians in Tammany Hall and help the public to understand what was going on in their current society with cartoons since many could not read. He also became the United States' Consul General to Guayaquil in Ecuador, which was a position he generously accepted from President Roosevelt.
