This quote shows that God is the person who decided whether or not you go to hell. If you sin, you are in a scary amount of danger because hell is a bottomless pit of fire and wrath, and God can put you with the many damned souls in hell. This quote means that not only do you have to suffer the wrath of God and hell for one moment, but for all of eternity. Whenever you look ahead of you, there is no end to the tunnel, it will forever be continuous. Edward uses this quote to show how you will have to spend eternity in hell, talking about how your thoughts will be swallowed up and you will be despaired of getting any rest, knowing that you will have to spend eternity fighting with the vengeance of god.
