Storytelling is a key part of aboriginal culture as the aboriginal people use stories to explain the creation of everything around them. 'Dream time' stories as they are known within the indigenous culture hold many valuable lessons about life and are often told through song and dance. I believe it is important to show case these stories within our festival, so we will have aboriginal volunteers come to perform dream time stories on the main stage at specific times over the duration of the festival.

The elders' main job now days is to speak for the wider aboriginal community and make their mark in education, politics and sport.
To honour the elders we would like to invite a few of them to speak and be involved with the organisation of the festival. Richard Wilkes, Robert Isaacs and Jeanice Krakouer are all aboriginal elders that have done amazing things for the community in WA and we would be delighted to have them participate in this event too celebrate their culture.

This is to help non-Indigenous people recognise and respect that the event is held on Indigenous land. The two stages will also include other cultural performances including live music and story telling featuring special guests, another means to informing the public of Indigenous history. Other events will be held in large pop-up tents and include interactive activities like a dance area, visual art and painting, talks from public figures and information booths.

These activities and performance will provide entertainment that celebrates and educates the public about the rich history and culture of Indigenous people. This in turn will aid in communicating the importance of preserving this culture and caring for those affected by addiction.

Once the actual performances and events have been finalised finer detail including stage design and set times need to addressed in order to insure practicality and safety. Throughout this process it is important to consult and discuss with local indigenous elders and representatives in order to maintain respect and originality. It is also vital that we consider traditional beliefs and protocol when preforming. As Stella has mentioned the involvement of an Indigenous figure like Richard Wilkes is beneficial as we can discuss matters and concerns and conduct the festival in respectful and effective way. Assistant from Wilkes and others helps build a management team that will oversee the performances and activities and look after those involved in performing. This team of mostly volunteers will ensure the festival is conducted smoothly and assist the needs of artists and public figures . Because the festival will require a large amount of volunteers to help out, the opportunity for local Indigenous people to participate is a positive means to embrace and cherish Indigenous culture.

http://treatyrepublic.net/content/noongar-elders-slam-native-title-deal-sham-wa

Indigenous had some exposure to alcohol prior to European contact. However, following the arrival of the ‘First Fleet’ the volume and availability of alcoholic beverages increased significantly…[Alcohol] became the cornerstone of early social and economic colonial life in Australia…Aboriginals acquired a taste for alcohol, thus suited European colonists who reportedly used alcohol as a means of exchange for sex or labor with Aborigines…It was not long before the harmful effects of alcohol on the lives of Aborigines became apparent. As a response to the devastating effects of colonialism, including dispossession, and illness and death resulting from disease and confrontation, alcohol became somewhat of a panacea for Aboriginal people’s pain, with many using it as a means of escape and solace. Some Indigenous became then addicted to wines, Beer and Spirits (Aboriginal Health Council of Western Australia
Submission Response
Inquiry into the harmful use of alcohol in Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander communities).

“Drinking to die” because of a deep feeling of helplessness rooted in social disadvantage and boredom.

source: Inquiry to examine the harmful use of alcohol in indigenous communities. http://www.theaustralian.com.au

He has accepted to be our guest speaker, and he will be talking about substance abuse as factor of suicide within indigenous communities. I strongly believe that his presence and contribution to our festival will be beneficial to the audience in getting a greater understanding of the consequences of the introduction of substance abuse since colonization of Australia.

Through his work and multitude books, Henry has inspired young Australian to embrace indigenous causes.
It is a great opportunity to have Henry participation to our festival.

A brief history of Aboriginal Australia

Evidence suggests that the first Aboriginal peoples to migrate to Australia arrived between 65000 and 45000 years ago, travelling partially by foot across the frozen glaciers of the last ice-age and then by means of boat to arrive on the continent. The first archaeological evidence of Aboriginal settlement is dated as 65000AD with an axe grinding stone being found in Kakadu National park in the Northern territory. Followed by the finding of two rock shelter sites in the Northern territory which have been dated as 56000AD, there is evidence in these sites of the crafting of stone tools. Much like their modern descendants prior to colonisation, the early aboriginal inhabitants of Australia lived a hunter-gatherer lifestyle, sustaining themselves by harvesting local roots and vegetables, as well as hunting the vast array of megafauna native to the region. The Aboriginal people of Australia developed various technologies to assist their hunting and harvesting dependant on their geographical location, examples of this would include desert tribes manufacturing spear tips from hard stone, while coastal tribes would create spear tips from fish bone.

Some examples of Aboriginal Australian technology

The boomerang: Perhaps the most well known technology utilised by the Indigenous Australians. Designed as a tool for hunting and skirmishes with other tribes, the boomerang was designed to fly in a curved pattern and return to the thrower. While other cultures manufactured similar thrown weapons, the boomerang is a uniquely Aboriginal invention.

The Woomera: Designed to allow extra leverage while throwing a spear, acting as an extension of the human arm. This tool was commonly crafted using hardwood with a notch cut or stone placed at the end.

Canoes: These watercraft were made from light buoyant bark and commonly used as an easy means of crossing small bodies of water such as lakes, lagoons or large rivers.

The humpy: A form of temporary shelter fashioned from bark and branches supported by the trunk of a large tree, these small dwellings were most commonly utilised by the nomadic tribes in times of heavy rain and flooding.

Minimizing cost is important as having to spend too much money on a fundraising event defeats the purpose of it. Someone will be in attendance at all times to handle and enquirers as well as prompt any answers out of the participants and participation will be rewarded with a simple treat. Examples of interactive activity include beer goggle and guessing games such as order a pie chart to what you think proportions of an issue are. The purpose of this booth will also be to illustrate the harms of substance abuse. This is another aim of our festival; to deter anyone from going down the path of substance abuse.

Aboriginal kinship

The 500 nomadic Aboriginal tribes of Australia practice an intricate social and religious system centred around kinship and a strong connection to the earth and their ancestral spirits. Each tribe’s clan structure is centred around a system anthropologists refer to as moiety from the Latin word Medius, meaning half. Each member of an Aboriginal tribe is divided into one of two moieties, which they believe is decided by their ancestral spirits based upon their mother or father’s moiety, as well as their generation. Complimenting this is totems, the next level of kinship among Aboriginal tribes. Everyone within a tribe has 4 totems, 3 of which are assigned to them at birth based on their clan, nation and family, the fourth totem is determined by the person’s strengths and weaknesses. The totems assigned to a person determined what roles and duties a person holds within the tribe, as well as determining their code of conduct. The third and final level of kinship is skin names, which determines how individuals within the tribe and outside the tribe should interact, as well as showing the individual’s bloodline. The skin name system works as a cycle of 16-32 names, for example in a patrilineal system (taking from the father’s side), should the father’s skin name be the third (three) in the cycle, the children’s name will be the fourth (four) of the cycle. This then means that all other “four” children in the tribe are considered siblings and all “threes” take the role of parents. This system worked to ensure the stability of the tribe, meaning that if a biological parent passed away, the child was not left without a guardian. These systems of kinship form the foundation of Aboriginal society and serve as proof of the deep emotional and spiritual connection between members of the community up to this very day.

Dreamtime

The Aboriginal religious system and creation story lives through the medium of art, song, dance and story, it was not until the arrival of the British that this intricate system was compiled into books. The dreaming or “Tjukurrpa” started with the ancestral spirits walking the earth many years ago at the time of its creation, creating animals, plants, rivers and mountains as they went. Additionally, the ancestor spirits determined the relationships between tribes and nations. After their job was done the spirits turned themselves into the animals, plants, rivers and mountains they created. Many tribes hold different variations of the creation story, an example of this comes from the Gaguju people from Northern Australia

“Life started when a creator woman called Warramurrungundjui came out of the sea and gave birth to the first people and gave them the languages. She carried with her a digging stick and a dilly bag holding yams, waterlilies and other important plants. She planted the food and created waterholes with her digging stick on the ground. Other creator beings appeared...After completing her creative act, Warramurrungundj turned herself into a rock.”

The dreaming is not a distant story discussed and remembered by Aboriginal people, it is as alive and growing as the trees, animals and rivers that dot the land, forever a reminder of the ancestral spirits that live through these objects and creatures. Though the creation story changes from tribe to tribe, each variation holds the common emphasis on the importance of kinship, connection and preservation of the earth and the duty to keep the dreaming alive through art, word of mouth, song and dance.
