Programs such as seasonal fundraisers are how I address the school's needs. Fall fundraisers hosted by the PTO or PTA such as selling flowers (mums) and candy will help the school raise money for various needs. Other seasonal fundraisers such as selling holiday pictures, wrapping paper, donuts, pizza kits, etc. will also help fulfill the school's needs. "Often money is collected by businesspeople, service groups, PTAs, advisory groups, and other organizations which support the need..." (Moore, Bagin, Gallagher, 2016, p. 262).

As a new school leader, I immediately became informed about the low poverty rate of the community. Within the community, there are several students without appropriate seasonal clothes, school supplies, and necessities for cleanliness. After consulting and collaborating with a trusted committee, we then created a program where students' needs would be met right within the school. A designated closet within the school would host appropriate seasonal clothing such as winter jackets, boots, sandals, and shorts. The closet also supplies toothpaste, hair brushes, pads, hair bows, deodorant, new book bags, pencils, binders, etc. This supply closet or comfort closet is our way of trying to close the achievement gap and make sure that no child is left behind. Our theme for the closet is comfort.

Blazer, C. & Romanik, D. (2009). The effect of poverty on student achievement. p. 1-23.

School policies such as confidentiality, No Child Left Behind, and Title 1 policies were a few that we kept in mind when creating the closet comfort and joy project. Keeping these policies in mind were definitely important especially when dealing with finances. The No Child Left Behind Act includes all students no matter disability or financial struggle. Because the school is located in a low poverty community, it was crucial to keep the Title 1 policies in mind when creating the school comfort and joy closet in mind.

Reaching out to stakeholders was truly the biggest part of providing the supplies for the comfort and joy closet. Because of the stakeholders, we also have options for a program called "build a bed". This program provides a bed for students who do not have one. The comfort and joy closet would not be successful with the community.
