Ability grouping is mainly based on data from the previous year. Mrs. Mullen explained that the students' first grade teachers are very aware of their abilities and that she trusts them in the beginning of the year to know which reading level the students are at. The teachers from the previous year will label students as either approaching, on level, or beyond level. In Mrs. Mullen's classroom, she has several groups consisting of students that are at these different reading levels. She does not give each group a name but rather calls out each individual name when asking students to form the group. This makes it harder for students to label groups as good or bad, and she has had no problems with this method in her many years of teaching.
