https://padlet.com/filippar/opd6b899076pe5g0 The Greek state and its tourists, amongst others, worship the ancient Greek archaeology of Athens. Modern life swirls around the borders of the ancient and Roman Agora, which are decorated with graffiti and street art. Furthermore, Ottoman and Islamic influences are carefully hidden in the invisible liminalities of society, while they were and are present in Athens to a large extent. How is the Greek identity presented to us when we walk at the borders of the ancient and Roman Agora in Athens? In this padlet, I offer images of a virtual walking tour I created in Google Maps. Several places in this tour are shown in different periods, through which transformations at the borders become visible. Some of the posts also contain pictures of how the involved place is usually presented in its ‘perfect imagined form’ by travel organizations (or others). The numbers and colors of the posts correspond with the ones described in the itinerary of the virtual tour (see VIOLET post). The colors of the posts represent different sorts of places: WHITE focuses on the ancient Agora, GREEN shows the Ottoman remainders (one of them is also part of Kaminari’s research mentioned below), BLUE contains the street life at the border of the Agora, YELLOW refers to the Christian elements, and the PINK posts continue the narrative started by the research of Melinna Kaminari. Her research has inspired me to continue her argument but differently, i.e. by ‘walking’ a virtual tour in Athens ‘visiting’ certain places in different years. I visualized my research in this padlet to support a paper I have written for a course at the University of Amsterdam (Project Greece: Athens).
