1. Power refers to the ability to one's will to be carried out without resistance or threat. Two examples are the court and the police, and parental power. Legitimate authority is a special type of power where people are not forced to follow someone's will but they still do as they are authorised figures. Two examples would be religious leaders and political figures. Furthermore, in ancient times, power was more common among people than in modern ages as people have allocated authoritative figures who carry out certain functions in society instead.
2.
a) Traditional authority: People believe in this authority due to the holiness of the ancient traditions, beliefs and customs.
b) Rational-legal authority: Derives from law and is based on the belief of the legitimacy of society's laws, and the rights of leaders to act under these rules.
c) Charismatic authority: Stems from an individual's extraordinary personalities, qualities and lifestyle. These traits allow them to mobilise people to act a certain way.
Rational-legal authority represents rationalisation as it ensures power is transferred in an orderly manner in a time of crisis.
3. We find Weber's ideas and theories useful. This is because we see these figures in the modern day too and therefore these theories are still relevant. Weber's ideas aim to show the evolution of how authority is imposed, which is relevant in our modern society where we can see how authority has progressed throughout the years.

1. Can you explain the difference between power and authority? Provide 2 examples for each.
- Power is defined as the ability or potential of an individual to influence others and control their actions. Authority is the legal and formal right to give orders and commands, and take decisions.
Authority example : Government Officials
Power example : Police Officers abusing black people

2. Explain the three types of authority according to Max Weber and provide one example for each? Which authority represents rationalisation? Why?
- Traditional authority is power that is rooted in traditional, or longstanding, beliefs and practices of a society. It exists and is assigned to particular individuals because of that society’s customs and traditions e.g. Royal Family
- Rational-legal authority derives from law and is based on a belief in the legitimacy of a society’s laws and rules and in the right of leaders to act under these rules to make decisions and set policy e.g. officials elected
- Charismatic authority stems from an individual’s extraordinary personal qualities and from that individual’s hold over followers because of these qualities. Such charismatic individuals may exercise authority over a whole society or only a specific group within a larger society e.g. Joan of Arc, Adolf Hitler, Mahatma Gandhi.

3. Do you find Weber's ideas and theories to be useful in understanding social and political issues in the contemporary world? Why?
- We think Weber's ideas and theories are useful in understanding social and political issues. His ideas are relatable to what we still see in everyday life. His ideas support the system of our society until nowadays.

1. Power is the ability to compel or control the behaviour of someone in order to do what you want or what they might not do on theeir own free will. The examples are physical power and threatening. While authority is the legitimate right to influence or control others and resources. The examples are police, government and law.
2. 1)Charismatical Authority: It involves a type of organization or a type of leadership in which authority derives from the charisma of the leader. This stands in contrast to two other types of authority: legal authority and traditional authority.
Example: Martin Luther King

2)Traditional Authority: a form of leadership in which the authority of an organization or a ruling regime is largely tied to tradition or custom.

Example: the Monarchy
3)Rational-Legal Authority: a form of leadership in which the authority of an organization or a ruling regime is largely tied to legal rationality, legal legitimacy and bureaucracy.
Example: rules that are in the constitution
Rational-Legal Authority is more reasonable, because traditional authority is too rigid, and charismatic authority is a little biased towards personal behavior. In comparison, rational-legal authority is more rigorous.
3. Weber's ideas are useful. We can find lots of examples of the three authorities in the modern society and his theory provides a way of thinking about the individual within a structural approach, and laying out a sociological methodology.
