Instead, Marie Franklin inspired me, made me want more in life, and felt incredibly welcoming whenever I had the chance to be with her. Franklin knew how to take charge of a class while also making me feel like I am more than just one of her students. Over the years, she has received the nickname "Professor Mom," and deservedly so. After all, like my actual mom, she is interested to hear what I have to say she roots for me to no end, and she wants what is best for me as a student. I have had little exposure to the clubs and activities of Lasell University, but as an observer, I am proud of what Franklin has established with the 1851 Chronicle. Her class material does not take a backseat, as I learned what I needed to know and more through my time with her during JOURNALISM and INVESTIGATIVE & BEAT REPORTING. Her experience at The Boston Globe is not just something she boasts about, she utilizes it within her material to the best of her ability, inspiring me to be a better writer, a better journalist. Who knows where I will end up in life? I could end up in journalism. I could end up in filmmaking. I could end up as a game show host. But if I could live a life half as exciting and rewarding as the one Marie Franklin had, I would be happy.

There aren’t many people in my life I can say made an immediate impact the moment we met. Yet anyone who knows the great Professor Marie Franklin would not be surprised that she is part of that minority.

Like so many others, Professor Franklin is the reason I enrolled at Lasell University. I made this life-altering decision during a COMMS open house back in 2009, where she commanded the room from the moment she walked in. She radiated a warmth and a confidence I could only aspire to emulate as she filled us in on her class curriculum and her experiences as a journalist. Until this moment, I had never had a teacher that made me want to hang on to their every word.

She continued to emulate that confidence and inspire me with every class I took with her, and in all of our long talks – both formal and informal. To this day, I still hang on her every word.

So, when I think of Professor Marie Franklin, it’s not a certain memory that stands out. It’s a feeling. Warm. Supported. Enlightened. And I know I’m not alone. Thank you Professor Franklin for being such a beacon for an entire generation of Lasell graduates!

What a legacy, what a woman. MCF has always played a bigger role than that of an educator and advisor. And for that, for everything, I will always be grateful, from the very bottom of my heart. 

She was a constant source of support for me from day one. She was there to help, to challenge, to listen, and as source of compassion and constant education.
