I have made it a priority to be present on campus, at parent drop-off, ITV, in the hallways and classrooms. A smile, a hug, and an open ear goes a long way. I have tried to call students by name and have each incident of discipline be a learning opportunity to handle conflict in a positive way.

Allowing my students to share something each week via Public Communication has helped me to be more in touch with each student on a "personal" level. This has fostered a deeper relationship with all 44 students. -Carol Poterek

"Respect your students, their parents, and yourself."
Children who may not see respect at home should see it modeled at school. It's those children who need it the most in order to become productive contributors to society. I have done my best to listen to their stories, celebrate their successes, and help anyone who needs it.

Allowing them to eat lunch with me when they have something on their mind that they want to discuss. We've had some serious heart-to-hearts this year during that bonding time.

Patience. Some say it is a virtue, I say it is a necessity when working with children (children of all ages). Remaining calm and giving them the time they need to find their success has made for a more enjoyable year for all and greater gains for the kids.-Cheryl

I try to be compassionate. I remind myself that the interactions at school might be the best part of their day and there is someone who cares about them. I smile often, encourage always, and help where I can.

Starting the day off with an individualized "Good Morning", sharing stories with each other, attending ball games or events outside of school, or just having a special lunch together help to build our relationships. -Michelle C.

HUMOR!! I've consistently made sure my groups ENJOYED our time together as well as enjoyed me. With the exception of a couple of fifth graders, who apparently don't understand the value of all that is Mrs. Robbins.

Sometimes it is hard to find time but I try to actively listen to all of them. They love to share information and stories with an adult. It makes them feel special.

Each morning, I get the opportunity to greet each student by shaking their hands and telling them how GLAD I am they came to school. We practice RESPECT each day-all day. Our class is a safe place to speak as well as to be heard. The result is a safe place to take a risk and learn something new. Tondi

Every morning, we start off by sharing something good that has happened in our lives. This allows me to get to know the students likes/dislikes and what is going on at home. After sharing their good thing, the student will pick a clap (power clap, double clap, or triple clap) and the next student will have to ask a question or comment on the good thing, having the students create relationships between themselves. -Kyra

Embracing the goofiness that comes with being a kid, trying to find ways for them to have fun while learning, and giving them opportunities to interact with each other (and me!) outside of formal lessons

I try to let them know I genuinely care about what is going on in their lives. I will try to squeeze in questions that pertain to them individually so they feel special. Learning comes much easier when they feel safe and cared for in our presence.

Every morning we start the day with a fun routine of a Mr. Kobold Joke and Fact of the day. Mr. Kobold was created many years ago as a way to build a loving, fun community. The daily fact correlates with our cross-curriculum unit of study for the week, such as the Earth, mealworms, vertebrates, continents, etc. We enjoy sharing together and just loving one another's unique gifts.

I greet students every morning in the hallway next to the mailboxes. I try to extend a welcome to each and every one of them... It makes my day when they finally start to greet me too. I want everyone, students and parents, to know that we are really glad they are at HNIS!

I have always subscribed to the philosophy that my students will work harder to try to please me if they like and trust me than if they feel unloved and disrespected-- my students have proven this to be true. Many of them never hear "I love you" or "Great job" unless it is from me here at school. It is important to me to provide experiences and environments in which they can feel proud of their accomplishments, loved for who they are, and know someone is here to advocate for them no matter what <3 The partnership that is created within a positive teacher/student relationship is an amazing gift to all involved!

I try to create a relationship with each student that goes outside the boundaries of mathematics, science, and reading. I want to know what they like to do after school, what they ate for breakfast, what they're going to do this weekend, what makes them laugh, tick, and gives them joy, just to try and create a relationship that is more bonding than 7x8. It's something that all the teachers do at HNIS, and I try to keep it going. David

Each morning I greet my students with high-fives, smiles, and hugs. I tell each student good morning and we have a few minutes before ITV starts for the students to share with me something that his important to them.

I share myself with them - pictures of my family, stories from home, memories as a child. They get to know me as a person and that lets them feel more comfortable opening up to me when they need to. I've heard some sad stories but I know they felt better getting it out and I'm happy I was able to have that relationship where they could open up.

Wow! I believe that relationships is part of the root to learning. To teach requires not only knowledge of the material being taught but also knowing the students being taught which means getting to know and building a relationship with the student. In addition to developing relationships with the students, being new to the school system required me getting to know and building relationships with my administrative team and peers. By building these relationships, friendships have been developed and bonds made which makes for a positive learning environment. As stated in our book reading, "it is people, not programs, that determine the quality of a school".

I have truly learned the importance of student relationships this year. Definitely something I will facilitate more starting on Day 1 next year. This year has been one of learning and trial/error. Things that work: Good morning high fives, afternoon hugs, lunch buddies, personal chat time, classmate chat time, "class council" meetings, class links, etc. They love to feel special when you are interested about what they are interested in.
