<title>Maggie Lena Walker of Richmond, Virginia, was the first African American woman to charter a bank in the United States. Having been quoted in the St. Luke Herald, as newspaper she founded in 1902, Ms. Walker said “Let us put our money together; let us use our money; Let us put our money out at usury among ourselves, and reap the benefit ourselves,” Maggie Lena Walker had a vision to make tangible improvements in the way of life for African Americans and women. Disabled by paralysis and limited to a wheelchair later in life, Walker also became an example for people with disabilities. In 1903, she chartered the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank for which Mrs. Walker also served as the bank’s first president. Later she agreed to serve as chairman of the board of directors when the bank merged with two other Richmond banks to become The Consolidated Bank and Trust Company, which grew to serve generations of Richmonders as an African-American owned institution.</title>
