Malala's reaction to this was to begin speaking up for a girls' right to receive education.
This activism resulted in Malala becoming a target for the Taliban, and, in October of 2012, she was shot on her way home from school.

Malala went through months of rehabilitation and surgeries, only to continue her activism. She is one of the most forceful advocates for worldwide education for girls and the youngest Nobel laureate (17 years old).
