Reflection 2

The three privileges I chose for this reflection are male privilege, U.S citizen privilege and light skin privilege. After reading the male privilege checklist I can say that I benefit from male privilege. Some of the points made I have already been exposed to and some I have not been exposed to. For example, on the male privilege checklist number 22 states “If I’m careless with my driving it won’t be attributed to my sex.” I can personally attest to this because myself as a male driver most times I see a female do something outlandish on the road I usually attribute it to her sex. Another example of male privilege I benefit from is stated in number 7 which says “If I’m a teen or adult, and if I can stay out of prison, my odds of being raped are so low as to be negligible” I know that this is true because I can walk the streets of downtown Baltimore at not and not have to think about the possibility of being raped which I know is not the case for women walking the streets at that time of night. Number 5 in the text says “I am far less likely to face sexual harassment at work than my female co-workers are. This is a fact. Cosmopolitan magazine conducted a survey of 2,235 woman and found that 1 out of 3 of those women had faced sexual harassment in the workplace at some point in their life (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/02/19/1-in-3-women-sexually-harassed-work-cosmopolitan_n_6713814.html).

I also benefit from U.S citizen privilege. There were many points that made this clear to me starting with number 1 which says “most, if not all the time, I am able to surround myself with people who share a common collective history, who understand the norms of U.S society, who speak the same language that I do, and who understand my culture.” This is true because I can walk up to most people that surround me a daily basis and share moments about U.S history and can relate personally. I also can approach most people for help because I can count on them to speak English about 99 percent of the time. Number 3 in the article says “I don’t have to worry about worrying that one small misstep could lead to my deportation, even if I currently have legal authority in the U.S.” This is also something that I do not have to worry about because I am a natural born citizen of the U.S. For many Naturalized citizens they are here in the U.S legally however they still have requirements they must meet. For example, if you an adult who has obtained a green card you may have to maintain a constant Employment status usually with a specific unemployment window. I also do not have to worry about not being able to call for help or emergency services because I might get deported. Many people who are here illegally cannot get these services because you will need identification which you do not have if you are here illegally. I do not have to worry about not being able to vote locally and federally. If you are not a U.S citizen and only posses a green card you cannot vote at the federal level, this means that you have no say in who your president is.

The privilege that I do not benefit from is light skin privilege. The obvious reason that I do not benefit from this is that I am not light skinned, I am a dark skinned male. Outside of my obvious reason that I don’t benefit from this privilege there are many others. For example, most people do not look at me and automatically assume that I am mixed with another race as stated in number 7 of the text. I also am looked at as angrier or more aggressive than my light skinned counterparts. While being called a redbone pertains to a light skinned woman and not myself I can relate to this. Growing up and still to this day men like myself see a light skinned woman and still say “man look at that redbone right there” and it’s said as a compliment. A dark skinned woman would not get that same terminology because of the color of her skin.

Hello America, I just wanted to write you a letter to tell you how I feel about you and the truth is that I love you. I love being here and being apart of this great country. So much that I decided to defend you in the armed forces and tattooed you on my skin. You make me happy but sometimes you make me mad but that still does not change how I feel about you. I have so many questions for you that I wish I could get the answers to. One question that I would ask you is what are some things that you would change about yourself. One thing that I’m sure you’ve heard about yourself is that you don’t care about black people. How do you feel about that and what do you plan to do to remedy that thought? Do you care about black people? If it means anything I think you do I just think that there is a small group of people that hate black people and they get grouped in with the masses. How do you feel about your leader Donald Trump? Some people hate him some people love him. I just thought that I would ask you how you felt about him. I personally don’t love or hate him I’m right in the middle with him. Somethings he says make me angry and other times I go wow that’s actually a great idea. How do you feel about the LGBTQ community? Do you see the progress that we have made? People of that community can now be married, they can join the military and many other great things that used to not be possible. We as a country have come a long way with this community but there are many other problems that still exist. For example, the T in LGBTQ stands for transgender. As you may know they are the only ones in that community that cannot join the military. Now I am sure there are some good reasons why this is, but I think there are far more reasons why they should be able to. How do you feel about that? Some say that life living here sucks or that just don’t want to be here, but I’ll stay because you always find a way to make things better. I think that it appears that we are divided and full of hatred and sometimes I do think that things will never get better, but I know that this will only make us stronger when we get past it. I’ve seen us go through so many other challenging times together and people always find a way to move on this is why I still believe in you. I know that you can be the great country that everyone wants you to be I hope that you get this letter and think about the things that you can do better because I would be lying to you if I told you that nothing is wrong because the truth is I only spoke about a few issues but there are so many other things that you need to address. Another thing that I would like you to do and this is coming from my military background and that is can you just mind your own business sometimes we don’t have to be in other peoples countries all the time and telling them what do. This is why other countries hate us. I agree that sometimes it is necessary but other times its just confusing why you even needed to step in we need to worry about our own problems before we can fix other countries problems. This is all that I have for you today hopefully we start to see more change in the country and I know that it will come we just have to become better people for each other and hold each other up as brothers and sisters and I know that we can get there.
