This French colony started as a pirate's port but after a few people settled on the island and started sugar plantations it became a home to many slaves and was called St. Domingue. Slaves mad up about 90% of the population. Colonial society was divided into different groups starting with white slave owners, then free people of color, then petite blanches, then slaves. Everybody had something to complain about regarding the government. Unrest continued and the slaves revolted after hearing about the Declaration of The Rights of Man. Petit blanches argued that they were the only oppressed people because they couldn't afford slaves. They proposed a democracy, but slaves wouldn't be allowed to vote. France the sent troops over to the colony to try and clam the situation. They made free people of color French citizens which angered the petit blanches and they started fighting. Slaves then revolted in the chaos. The Spanish were all for the emancipation of slaves so they decided to invade the colony. France was overwhelmed and freed the slaves. Louverture, the leader of the slave revolt switched allegiances to guarantee the freedom of the slaves and heled resolve the conflict between Spain and France in the colony. Napoleon later reintroduced slavery to St Domingue which caused a guerilla war which the slaves ultimately won due to disease. The island was then renamed Haiti.
