Growing up she loved animals, especially chimps. In fact, her favorite toy was a chimp named Jubilee. This animal lover always dreamed of going to Africa to study chimps. As a young girl, Jane was very curious. One day she went to her parents chicken coop to observe how a hen lays eggs. When she was 8, her parents divorced and moved to Bournemouth, England. There she met with the famous wildlife expert, Sir Richard Attenborough. Before beginning her observations, she worked as a secretary and waitress to save money to go to Africa. Jane traveled to Africa when she was 23 and immediately fell in love. This animal lover decided to live in Tanzania and study chimps. She learned many interesting things about chimps. This observer learned that chimps are omnivores, and she learned that chimps make tools using leaves or grass. While watching the chimps, Jane saw that some of the chimps were kind while others were angry and would fight each other. Jane would name the chimps after their personality. This animal lover wrote books about her discoveries. Some of her books were "In the Shadow of Man," "The Chimpanzees of Gombe," and "40 Years at Gombe." Her research earned her awards like the J. Paul Getty Conservation Prize, The Living Legacy Award, and the Benjamin Franklin Medal in life science.
